About Meta Box Views
Your custom fields exist, but nobody sees them
Creating content with ten fields in the admin is the easy part. The hard part comes later: showing that data on the site forces you to edit theme files, depend on a page builder that fills the page with layers of divs, or pay a developer every time the design changes.
Meta Box Views is a Meta Box extension that solves that last stretch: you pick the fields, fill in a few parameters and build the template from the admin itself, without touching the theme.
Which fields you can show and how they are inserted
It works with fields created with Meta Box, with the posts' own fields (such as title and content), with site settings, with user fields and even with query fields. You can also customize templates for content types that have no Meta Box fields at all.
From a side panel you insert each field with one click. It supports cloneable groups and, depending on the field type, extra output options appear (for example, to adjust a map field). With object and query fields you can pull in several posts and show them as a grid or list in an archive, or output the title, content and comments on a single page.
Twig for what HTML can't do
HTML alone can't show a section only if a field has a value, or put in a fallback image when a post has no featured image. For that the extension integrates Twig, a very popular template engine for PHP: it allows conditions (if... else), for loops and filters to format the output. A typical case is looping through a cloneable group and printing each item.
In addition, HTML, CSS and JavaScript each have their own editor with syntax highlighting, and shortcodes are supported. Since you write the code that comes out, you decide the semantics and the weight of the result, and you avoid the nested divs a page builder tends to leave behind.
Location rules: each view in its place
A rule system decides where each view appears, and you can combine several conditions. It lets you build a view for:
- The single page of a content type
- The archive of a content type
- Posts in a specific category or with a specific tag
- The homepage
- A landing page or any other page
You can apply the rule to the whole layout or only to the post content area. With the first option you can redesign the site without touching the theme files.
You write the HTML and CSS, and Meta Box is required
It is an extension: it doesn't work on its own, it needs Meta Box, and the fields are created with Meta Box, not with it. On top of that, you write the template yourself. Here is how the work is split:
- It handles: choosing fields, inserting them with one click, using conditions and loops with Twig and deciding on which pages each view applies.
- You provide: the design, that is, the HTML and CSS of each view. If you don't write code, you will have to learn the basics or hire a professional.
- Comes separately: creating the fields (with Meta Box) and, if you work with Elementor or Divi, connecting the fields to them through their integration extensions.
Questions before choosing Meta Box Views
Can I use it without knowing how to code?
Selecting fields and inserting them is simple, but the template is HTML and CSS, and conditions are written in Twig. Without some basics you will move slowly.
Does it work if my content has no Meta Box fields?
Yes. You can also customize templates for content types that don't use Meta Box fields.
Can I use shortcodes inside the views?
Yes, they are supported.
Does it replace my theme's templates?
You can apply a view to the whole layout of a page, so many theme templates are no longer needed. The sensible approach is to start with one type of page and expand from there.
