About MonsterInsights Custom Dimensions Addon
Writers and editors who want to stop deciding by gut feel
If you publish with several people, Analytics tells you how many sessions you had, but not who wrote what brought them or what topic it covered. So the editorial calendar ends up being decided by habit, and habit rarely matches what your audience actually reads.
This addon suits anyone running a blog, an online magazine or a content site with several authors, categories and an SEO plugin installed. It adds little if your site is a corporate page with four fixed sections: there are no writers to compare and no topics to prioritize.
- It is a MonsterInsights addon and does not work on its own: it needs MonsterInsights installed.
- The SEO dimensions only work if you use Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, Rank Math or SEOPress.
- It measures traffic by dimension. It does not help you write or optimize your texts, only see how they perform.
MonsterInsights Custom Dimensions Addon: which author, topic and format bring the visits
Each dimension adds a WordPress-specific data point to your sessions that Google Analytics does not see by default. With them, the report stops talking about individual posts and talks about groups:
- Author: which writers on your team generate the most pageviews, with data rather than a hunch.
- Category: which topics attract the most readers, so you can decide where to put your editorial effort.
- Tag: a finer level than category, to learn which subtopics are in demand.
- Content type: traffic broken down by custom post type, useful if you publish tutorials, reviews and resources and want to know which format works best.
Knowing that one post is popular does little for planning. Knowing that a whole category is popular does.
Do better-optimized articles really get more visits?
Many teams fight to turn the SEO traffic light green without checking whether it shows in traffic. MonsterInsights Custom Dimensions Addon takes two data points from your SEO plugin and puts them next to real visits.
- SEO score: groups content by score and shows the total views of each group.
- Focus keyphrase: shows views grouped by each post's target keyphrase, so you see what each piece is trying to rank for and how much traffic it gets.
Publishing on Tuesday at nine because it has always been done that way
The publish time dimension adds each post's date and time so you can see which days and time slots consistently gather the most pageviews. It is how you move from scheduling for convenience to publishing when your audience is already online.
You choose what gets measured and see it all without leaving WordPress
From Insights » Settings » Conversions you activate whichever combination you want. Besides the ones above there are others, such as whether the visitor was logged in, their User ID or the link type. Separating logged-in users keeps your own team from muddying the real audience data, and the User ID lets you tie sessions to specific members or customers.
Everything appears in Insights » Reports » Dimensions, with one section per dimension. You can change the date range to compare periods and export to PDF to share results. There is no need to touch your Google Analytics account settings.
Do I have to program anything in Analytics? And which SEO plugin works?
Do I need to open Google Analytics to see the data?
No. The data for all dimensions is available in the Dimensions report inside the WordPress dashboard.
Do I have to write code or configure dimensions in Analytics?
No. You activate the dimensions you want in the addon settings and MonsterInsights handles the configuration with Google Analytics.
Which SEO plugins work with the score and the keyphrase?
Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, Rank Math and SEOPress. If you use another one, check first whether you only care about the other dimensions.
Is it useful if I write on my own?
Yes for categories, tags, content types and publish times. The author dimension, however, makes sense when more than one person is publishing.
