About myCred Pending Points

Points that are handed out instantly and then can't be taken back

In a community with points, every rewarded action is an invitation to cheat: fake sign-ups, filler comments, repeated actions to climb in rank. If points are credited the moment they are earned, by the time you spot the abuse they have already been spent or have moved someone up the leaderboard, and taking them back from a user is an argument you would rather avoid.

A points program behaves like a currency: the easier it is to earn, the less it is worth, and people notice. myCred Pending Points adds an intermediate step: points are recorded as pending and you decide when they become real.

How the pending status works in myCred Pending Points

It is a myCred add-on: it does not work on its own, it needs myCred installed and your points already set up. What it adds is a review layer before crediting:

  • Pending status: before the user receives the points, they are held back and you can review the log.
  • Include and exclude rules: you can apply it to everything or only to certain references, roles, specific users, badges or ranks. That way you can keep a close eye on newcomers without slowing down veteran members.
  • Automatic release: you set a number of days and, once that period is over, the points are released on their own.
  • Manual release: from the pending points log you can release any user's points whenever you want.

You can also use it with one or several point types, and it works on a single site or on a multisite installation. One limit worth being clear about: the plugin holds and releases, but it does not decide for you whether an action is legitimate. Reviewing the log is human work, so if you expect an automatic anti-fraud filter, this is not it.

Questions people ask before installing it

Can I hold points for only some users?

Yes. You can include or exclude by role, user, badge or rank, as well as by reference, which is the type of action that generates the points.

Do I have to release everything by hand?

No. You can set a number of days after which the points are released automatically. Manual release is there for the cases where you want to act sooner.

Does it work if I run several point types?

Yes, the pending status can be enabled for one point type or for several.

Does it work on multisite?

Yes, it can be used on a single site or on a multisite installation.

Which rules make sense to put on hold

You don't need to hold everything. The most practical approach is to start with the actions that are most open to abuse or that you want to check before rewarding, and leave out the ones that are hard to fake. If you hold absolutely everything, users stop feeling the instant reward, which is exactly what makes a points system work.

The exception by role or rank is useful so you don't punish people who have already shown good behavior: trusted members are paid right away and newcomers go through review.

Try it with a test user before opening the days window

Before enabling it across your whole community, create a rule for a single reference, trigger that action with a test user and check how it shows up in the pending log. Then try releasing the points by hand and, with a short period, verify that automatic release arrives when you expect it. That way you will know how the process looks to your members before announcing it, and you will be able to explain why their points don't appear immediately.
