About MyListing Directory and Listing Theme
Nobody visits an empty directory, and nobody pays to be listed in one
Whoever builds a directory usually thinks first about the design, the map and the filters. The real problem arrives on launch day: with twelve listings published, visitors do not find what they are looking for and do not come back, and the business you wanted to charge sees no reason to pay to appear on a site nobody uses.
It is the cold start of every directory, and a better theme does not fix it. A directory is paid for by the businesses listed in it, but only once it has visitors, and it only has visitors once it is full. The order matters more than any feature.
MyListing, by 27collective, brings the pieces to break out of that circle. It also needs several things on top.
Listing types, fields and a search with its own index
- Unlimited listing types, each with its own submission form, search form, card and profile page.
- Fields for almost everything: business hours with several periods, locations, recurring dates, files, price lists and restaurant menus.
- One index table per listing type, with filters by category, region, range, date, rating and open now, plus proximity search.
- Maps with Google Maps, Mapbox or OpenStreetMap and several locations per listing.
- Events with one date, several or recurring, exportable to Google Calendar and iCalendar.
- Reviews by category and private messaging linked to each listing.
Seed first, let owners claim, charge later
Fill the directory before opening it. MyListing supports importing listings with WP All Import, so you can start from your own list in a spreadsheet.
Let owners claim their listing. There are listing claims with a form per type, admin approval and a verified badge. The listing you seeded becomes your first contact: the owner arrives because they already appear, not because you persuaded them to sign up.
Charge when there is something to sell. Claims can be paid, and there are free and paid packages for each listing type, plus featured listings. Visit and click statistics show the owner what appearing brings them, which is the argument for charging them.
What MyListing needs on top
It does not work without Elementor and WooCommerce. Both are required, and parts of the theme are unavailable until they are active. Contact Form 7 is optional.
It does not charge recurring subscriptions on its own. For that it needs WooCommerce Subscriptions, which is a separate plugin.
It is not multilingual out of the box. Translating it requires the MyListing Multilang add-on, still in beta, together with WPML or Polylang.
PHP 8.2, two plugins and a demo: getting started
MyListing requires PHP 8.2 or newer and is tested up to PHP 8.5. It is compatible with WooCommerce 5 to 10 and with Elementor Pro.
- Upload the theme from Appearance, Themes, and activate it.
- Install and activate Elementor and WooCommerce from the theme's notice.
- Deactivate caching and optimisation and import one of the three demos: main, property or car.
- Adjust the fields and filters of the listing types before importing your data.
The demo overwrites part of the configuration, from menus and widgets to permalinks and WooCommerce pages. Import it on a clean install or with a backup, which is the only reliable way to undo it, and never two demos on the same site.
Other routes to a directory in the catalogue
If you prefer another directory theme, Listeo offers bookings by day, by time slot or with tickets. If you want to keep your current theme, Directorist is a plugin that supports several directory types in the same install.
For a job board, WP Job Manager is a job board plugin for WordPress. And for the pages that are not listings, MyListing is compatible with Elementor Pro.
Questions before building a directory with MyListing
Do I need Elementor and WooCommerce even if I am not going to charge?
Yes. Both are required.
Can I have restaurants, events and jobs on the same site?
Yes. Each listing type has its own fields and search, and they can be related, for example an event to its venue.
Can businesses claim their listing?
Yes, with admin approval, and claims can be charged for.
Does it work for a multilingual site?
Yes, with MyListing Multilang, in beta, plus WPML or Polylang.
