Building a news portal with a generic theme often ends in a front page that doesn't look like a newspaper, ads squeezed in awkwardly and heavy pages that hang on mobile. Newkarma is designed to avoid that: its look resembles the big Indonesian news portals, with a layout local readers recognise right away.
A day in the life of a portal with Newkarma, step by step
The reality of a small digital outlet is that almost nobody arrives through the front page: the visit lands on a single story, from Facebook or Google, reads it and leaves. Newkarma is easiest to understand by following that journey.
- Arrives from a social network: the article page includes floating share buttons, and you can enable Facebook comments if your distribution is concentrated there.
- Reads the story: you can combine three types of related posts at once (by tag, by category and by topic), so the reader keeps reading instead of leaving.
- Keeps scrolling: infinite scroll is available.
- Sees advertising: there are more than ten ad placements: floating left, right and bottom, and also inside the text, between paragraphs.
A warning on that last point: having many slots doesn't mean you should fill them all. A page crammed with ads tires the reader and can hurt your ad performance.
Menus and front page: five places to organise your sections
A portal with many sections needs good navigation. Newkarma offers five menu locations: side navigation, first, second, scrolling mobile menu and copyright menu. In addition, the top bar, banners and sidebar can stay fixed while the reader scrolls. The slider and widget tabs use ajax, so the front page feels dynamic without being overloaded.
Why Newkarma loads light
The theme works without jQuery and without icon fonts: icons are SVG. For a news site, where most traffic arrives on mobile with little patience, this matters more than any visual effect. The design adapts to every device and the heading structure (h1, h2 and h3) is built with on-page SEO in mind, with schema.org support.
What you need for AMP and for tracking
Newkarma is compatible with the official AMP plugin, both with its default settings and in transition mode, if you want the AMP pages to resemble the theme. In other words: AMP doesn't come built in, you need to install that plugin. It also has fields for the Facebook Pixel ID and the Google Analytics code, useful if you buy traffic on Facebook.
Customisation without touching code
From the customizer you can change all the colours, from the top navigation to the copyright, choose from more than 600 Google fonts and adjust their size. It also lets you import the demo data with one click.

No. It can also be used for technology reviews, automotive and other editorial niches, although its design is built around the news portal format.
Is it hard for a beginner?
It is built on WordPress standards and is managed from the customizer. Even so, anything geared to an Indonesian audience (design and approach) is worth checking in the demo if your audience is different.
Does it guarantee Google AdSense will accept me?
No. Approval depends on your content: fake news, hate speech or pirated software sites risk rejection, whichever theme you use.
What hosting does it need?
Your own WordPress installed on your hosting, with your own domain and server. It does not work without that installation.
