About Newsletter Amazon SES

When your hosting can no longer handle your sends

Newsletter Amazon SES is an add-on for the Newsletter plugin that routes all sending through Amazon SES, an email delivery service built for large volumes from the Amazon cloud. It is mainly recommended from around 10,000 emails.

What changes depending on who you are

If you already send thousands of emails

This is the profile it was designed for. Amazon SES is an inexpensive service for high volume, and once you enable it the addon makes Newsletter use it for every send.

If you manage someone else's blog or a client's

You can store the Amazon key and secret in the wp-config.php file using two constants (NEWSLETTER_AMAZON_KEY and NEWSLETTER_AMAZON_SECRET), so the blog administrator cannot see or change them from the panel. Both must be defined, and you should type them by hand to avoid pasted typographic quotes.

If your hosting is shared or a VPS

The addon includes a turbo mode that sends several emails at once with the official Amazon SDK. It depends on PHP's support for parallel execution, and some hosts limit it. On VPS or dedicated servers it usually works well; on shared hosting it may cause problems. Test it and use it with care.

Bounces and complaints: the list cleans itself

Amazon handles bounce notifications in a complex way. The addon reduces it to one button, "Activate the bounce tracking". From then on Amazon notifies the addon of bounced or complaining addresses, and it marks them so they are not emailed again. You can see their status in the subscriber database.

  • Hard bounces: unrecoverable delivery errors. They are marked as bounced.
  • Soft bounces: possibly recoverable errors, such as a full mailbox. You can enable their processing if you prefer to mark them too.
  • Complaints: always processed, and the subscriber moves to the "complained" status.

The notification is asynchronous: it can arrive within seconds or take days, because Amazon may retry delivery for hours before deeming an address invalid. To check that it works, send a test to [email protected] and look in the system logs for the latest file starting with amazon-bounce.

What to set up in Amazon before sending

Amazon AWS is not the Amazon store: you need a specific AWS account. The process has several pieces:

  • Create an IAM user with SES and SNS permissions, which is the way Amazon recommends generating access keys.
  • Copy the access key and the secret key (the secret is shown only once; if you lose it, you generate a new pair) and choose the correct AWS region in the addon.
  • Verify the sender address, which must be a real mailbox because Amazon sends a confirmation link. You can also verify the entire domain, which requires changes to your DNS.
  • Run a test: the message reaches your test subscribers through SES even if the addon is not yet enabled. If it goes well, you enable it.

Sandbox mode and other limits that slow you down at first

New Amazon SES accounts start in sandbox mode, an anti-fraud restriction you must unlock after verifying the sender. This addon is a complement: it needs the Newsletter plugin and your own Amazon account. It requires PHP with curl, Zlib and SSL. If errors appear with correct keys and region, regenerate the keys, because the Amazon SDK seems to have problems with some keys containing certain characters. Nor does it replace a good sender setup: check SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your domain.

Frequently asked questions about Newsletter Amazon SES

Is it useful for small lists?

Its advantage shows at high volumes; Amazon recommends it from 10,000 emails.

Can I test it without enabling it?

Yes. The test is sent to your test subscribers through SES even if the addon is disabled.

Do I have to use Amazon's global keys?

No. That is an obsolete method that still works; an IAM user is the recommended approach.

What happens to addresses that fail?

With tracking enabled, they are marked as bounced and stop receiving emails.
