About Newsletter Bounce Addon
Sending to dead addresses again and again can get you blacklisted
As a newsletter grows, part of the list stops existing: people who changed jobs, closed mailboxes, misspelled addresses. If you keep sending to them, servers read it as spam behavior and your domain or server can end up on a blacklist. Newsletter Bounce Addon detects those delivery failures and marks the addresses so they are not written to again.
A dedicated mailbox that the addon empties completely
When a message cannot be delivered, the server sends an error notice to the return path address you set in the main settings of the Newsletter plugin. Newsletter Bounce Addon reads those notices from a dedicated mailbox, extracts the affected address and marks it as bounced.
- Exclusive mailbox: every message it finds is processed and then deleted. Do not use your personal email.
- POP3 access: you need a username, password, hostname and, optionally, a port. If the mailbox supports TLS or SSL you can choose the protocol, but remember to change the port, which usually differs from 110.
- Hourly check: it processes up to 1000 messages per run (a limit that may change) and the panel shows the last check and the next one. If your site is busy with heavy tasks, for example sending to a large list, the check can be delayed or occasionally skipped.
Permanent bounces, temporary bounces and spam complaints
Permanent errors (the address does not exist) are the ones normally marked as bounced. Temporary ones, such as a full mailbox, are ignored by default, although you can configure the addon to treat them as bounces too. The addon does not analyze sub-error codes, because many servers do not fill them in correctly.
If the returned message includes a spam complaint, the subscriber is marked as "complained" instead of "bounced". The effect is the same: they no longer receive your emails. Keep in mind that subscribers confirmed with double opt-in also complain, and sometimes an antispam filter flags you by mistake. No plugin can fix that.
Check your sending setup before deciding whether Newsletter Bounce Addon fits
This addon only works if the error notices actually reach your mailbox. Review these points before installing it:
- It does not work with Gmail, which no longer supports POP3.
- With Post SMTP there is no known workaround: it removes the return path set by Newsletter.
- External sending services usually replace the return path with their own, because they need those notices for their own dashboard. If that is your case, you probably will not receive them and will manage bounces from that service.
- Its own authors recommend a professional delivery service for handling bounces and complaints, and they do not guarantee it detects every type of bounce.
How do I know if my sending system lets the notices through?
Deactivate the addon, send one or more campaigns and check with an email client whether the dedicated mailbox receives error notifications. If it is empty or only holds unrelated messages, the addon cannot do anything.
Can I test the configuration without losing messages?
Yes. The test checks the POP3 connection and analyzes 10 messages in dry-run mode: it does not mark addresses or delete anything. Some providers do not allow sending to the return path address, so a test email may fail even if the addon is fine.
What do I do if I get a connection error?
Check the hostname, username (it does not always match the email address), password, port and protocol. If everything is right, ask your provider whether a firewall blocks the connection. If you see "getaddrinfo failed", your server cannot resolve the host you entered.
What if it does not run at the expected time?
Most likely there is a problem with the WordPress scheduler.
