About Newsletter Elastic Email Addon

When your hosting is not the right place to send your newsletters

Sending a newsletter from the same server that hosts your website often ends badly: emails landing in spam, slow sending, or a host that limits how many messages you can send. Newsletter Elastic Email Addon integrates the Newsletter plugin with ElasticEmail, a mail delivery service.

What Newsletter Elastic Email Addon does day to day

It connects your Newsletter installation to your ElasticEmail account through an API key.

  • API connection: you paste the key into the addon's configuration page and run a test.
  • Automatic unsubscribe tag: ElasticEmail requires a cancellation tag so it can intercept unsubscribes. The addon adds it and configures it so the request also reaches Newsletter. If you see an unsubscribe tag that looks odd, this is why.
  • Concurrent sending (Turbo send): lets you send several emails at once instead of one after another, which can speed up delivery.

Validating the domain and the API key is your job

The addon does not do these steps for you, and they are the ones that take the most time.

  • What the addon solves: the connection with ElasticEmail, the unsubscribe tag and the concurrent sending option.
  • What you will have to do: create the ElasticEmail account, add your domain in its console and publish the SPF and DKIM records in your DNS (you can ask your domain provider for help if you don't know how).
  • Also yours: create the API key with permissions to send via HTTP, view suppressions and manage web notifications and activity. ElasticEmail's permissions are somewhat confusing, so check each box.

ElasticEmail's screens can change without notice, so the menu names you find may not match what you remember. For these two steps, the ElasticEmail service is the best place to get guidance.

If you run several blogs, use one key per site

ElasticEmail gives you a single API key, but you can create subaccounts from its console, each with its own key. This is useful if you have two blogs with newsletters run by different people: you separate usage and, above all, the reputation of each account. Subaccounts are mostly associated with agencies that resell the sending service to their clients.

Settings worth testing before sending to your whole list

Turbo send

Turning it on can improve performance, but some hosting providers block this kind of simultaneous process. The sensible approach is to try it with a small send and check that it works.

Plain text version

Every email has a formatted part and a simple text part, usually hidden. Since Newsletter sends its own text part, ElasticEmail does not generate its own even if that option is enabled. If you prefer ElasticEmail to generate it, disable the sending of the text part from Newsletter in the integration settings.

Free account

With a free plan, ElasticEmail may allow sending only to the address you used to register the account. Someone who keeps an old free plan may be able to send to anyone. Check this before planning a campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an ElasticEmail account?

Yes. You need your own account, a validated domain and an API key.

Can I validate only the SPF record?

ElasticEmail currently accepts that setup to validate the domain, but it may change its policy in the future. The safest option is to add both SPF and DKIM.

Why is there an unsubscribe tag I did not add?

The addon adds it because ElasticEmail requires it to intercept unsubscribes, and it configures it to notify Newsletter as well.

Can I use the same key on several sites?

You can, but if each site is run by different people, it is better to create subaccounts with one key for each.
