About Newsletter Geolocation Addon
Sending the same campaign to your whole list is convenient, but it stops working when part of your subscribers live in another country: the free shipping offer is valid in only one, the in-person event is thousands of kilometres away, or the message arrives in a context that does not apply to them. Newsletter Geolocation Addon gives Newsletter the ability to know which country each subscriber is in and to send a campaign only to the countries you choose.
Anyone writing to several countries segments late or never
Geographic segmentation is usually left for "when the list grows", and by then there are thousands of unclassified contacts and nobody wants to classify them by hand. This plugin saves you that work: you do not need to ask for the country in the form or add an extra field, because it works it out from the subscriber's IP address.
How Newsletter Geolocation Addon works with your list
There are three pieces worth understanding:
- Background engine: it processes all active subscribers and assigns each one a country. In the addon panel you can see the progress and check that the "next run" value is a future time, a sign that the engine is still alive.
- Country resolution, and region and city when available: the main data is the country. Region and city targeting is announced as a future improvement, so today you can only filter by country.
- Targeting option on every newsletter: you type a country name and, if there are subscribers in it, you can add it. It also shows how many active subscribers that country has. You can choose one or several.
Limits you should know before relying on it
- Imported emails cannot be geolocated, because they have no source IP. If your list came from a CSV, those contacts will have no country.
- If you select no country, the filter is not applied and the campaign goes to all subscribers.
- The number of subscribers per country changes with sign-ups and cancellations, so the figure you see when preparing the campaign is approximate.
- It is an add-on for Newsletter: it does not work on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Is the country updated if the subscriber travels or changes IP?
It can be updated under some circumstances, for example when they click a link in an email. It does not happen when they only open the email.
Why does opening the email not update the location?
Because opens are measured with an image, and some email clients may download it through a proxy. Newsletter does not store the IP of whoever gets that image, since it would be the proxy's and not the subscriber's.
Can I segment by city?
Not yet. Region and city targeting is planned, but today the available filter is by country.
Do I need it if I use the Reports addon?
Yes, it replaces the geolocation features of Reports, so you should install it if you already work with that addon.
What happens with my imported subscribers?
They stay without a country, so they will not appear when you filter by country.
The engine takes time to go through the list, so do not expect the full breakdown instantly
After you activate the addon, the engine assigns countries to active subscribers in the background. Before launching a segmented campaign, open the panel and check the progress. First run a test with a small country to check that the number of recipients matches what you expect.
