About Newsletter Google Analytics

When your newsletter shows up as direct traffic

You send a newsletter, visits reach your blog, and your reports don't tell you which of your sends brought them. Without tags on the links, part of that traffic gets lost among direct visits, and it's hard to know which content really moves your list.

Newsletter Google Analytics is an addon for The Newsletter Plugin that automatically adds Google Analytics UTM parameters to the links in your newsletters, to identify campaign, source and medium. If you also run paid link campaigns, you can measure them with the same criteria as your email marketing.

Different tags for each newsletter, with fixed values or placeholders

The parameters (campaign, source, medium and others) are set newsletter by newsletter, so each send can carry its own tag. You have two ways to fill them in:

  • Fixed values: the same text on all links.
  • Placeholders: values that adapt to each send, so you don't have to edit the tag by hand every time.

This matters most with Automated, the Newsletter module that generates newsletters on its own. Those sends can also carry Google Analytics tracking, and placeholders let you tell each one apart instead of having them all appear under the same campaign.

Newsletter Google Analytics lives alongside standard tracking

Enabling UTM tags doesn't switch off Newsletter's own tracking: both keep working and collecting data at the same time. You can keep the plugin's reports and, in parallel, see that same send inside Google Analytics.

There is also an option to apply tracking to links to external domains. Use it with judgment: the tags only give you data if the destination site has Google Analytics, and on a third-party website that data is seen by its owner, not by you. To measure visits to your own site, you don't need it.

Is Newsletter's tracking enough, or do you need UTM tags?

If your question is how many people opened and how many clicked, standard tracking already answers it. If you want to know what those people did on your site afterwards and compare it with other traffic sources, you need UTM tags and this addon. Keep three limits in mind: it is an add-on that doesn't work without The Newsletter Plugin, it doesn't create reports of its own (it only tags links), and the data appears in your Google Analytics, which must already be running on your site.

Does it work without The Newsletter Plugin?

No. It is an addon for that plugin and depends on it to add the tags to the links in its newsletters.

Can I use a different campaign in each newsletter?

Yes. The parameters are defined per newsletter, with fixed values or placeholders.

Do I lose Newsletter's reports when I enable it?

No. Standard tracking and Google Analytics tracking work at the same time and each one collects its own data.

Does it work for automated newsletters?

Yes, with Automated. Placeholders let you tell each automatically generated send apart.
