About Newsletter – Paid Membership Pro
You have a paid membership and a mailing list, and the two live apart. Someone signs up, pays, and you have to remember to add them to the list. When they upgrade or expire, the list stays the same and you end up sending the wrong offer to the wrong person. Newsletter – Paid Membership Pro connects both sides so the list keeps itself up to date.
One sign-up, start to finish: what happens when a member joins
Let's follow a person who joins your membership site. Here is the journey and what the add-on solves at each step.
Step 1: the sign-up form
Once installed, you decide how subscription is handled inside the Paid Membership Pro form itself. There are three options:
- Offer no subscription at sign-up.
- Show a "subscribe me" checkbox so the person decides.
- Make subscription mandatory and implicit at sign-up (the recommended option).
The mandatory one is the most convenient if you want to send newsletters, automatic notifications or welcome series to all your members. Choose according to how you plan to use the list.
Step 2: assigning lists by level
Each membership level can decide two things: which lists are activated and which lists are deactivated for whoever holds it. For example, you can add a paying member to an exclusive-content list and remove them from the promotions list meant for non-paying users. Lists you don't configure for a level are left untouched in the subscriber's profile.
Step 3: when the level changes
A member can move up, move down or see their plan expire. The add-on detects the change (whether automatic, by expiration or by upgrade) and applies the new list combination to the connected subscriber's profile. You don't have to check by hand who changed plans.
If you already have members: import and align them
The usual case is installing this on a community that is already running. The add-on includes an import that goes through your members (WordPress users) in the background. For each one, if their email isn't among Newsletter's subscribers, it creates a subscriber with the lists matching their level. If it already exists (matched by email), it updates their lists to match the level.
One detail that saves you complaints: the import doesn't send welcome or confirmation emails. It assumes that someone who is already a member doesn't need to confirm anything.
What Newsletter – Paid Membership Pro needs to work
It doesn't work on its own: it is an add-on that relies on the Newsletter plugin and on Paid Membership Pro, and both must be installed. Nor is it a tool for writing emails or creating membership levels; it just syncs who is on which list according to their level.
If your site has members at the time of installation, remember to run the import to align those who were already there.
Frequently asked questions
Can I let each person decide whether to subscribe?
Yes, with the "subscribe me" checkbox option at sign-up. The mandatory one is recommended, but it is not the only one.
What happens to lists I don't configure for a level?
They stay as they were in the subscriber's profile. Only the ones you mark to activate or deactivate change.
Is a confirmation email sent to imported members?
No. During the import, welcome and activation emails are not sent.
Is the list updated when someone upgrades their plan?
Yes. The level change, including by expiration, applies the list combination defined for the new level.
Does it work if I already have subscribers in Newsletter?
Yes. The import matches existing subscribers to your members by email and updates their lists.
