About Newsletter Sendgrid Addon
When your hosting server is the bottleneck for your emails
You build the list, write the campaign and, once you send it, some emails never arrive, your hosting cuts off the sending for too many messages, or your server ends up on a blacklist. Newsletter Sendgrid Addon is designed for that moment: it connects the Newsletter plugin to SendGrid so emails go out through an email delivery service instead of your website's server.
API 3 connection and a test before enabling
The addon connects to SendGrid through an API key (the API 3 method). You create it in the SendGrid dashboard, in the API key settings, and paste it into the addon configuration. You can give it full access, but the minimum permissions it needs are Mail Send and Mail Settings.
- Run the connection test before enabling it. As soon as you enable it, Newsletter starts sending through SendGrid, so check that a test email arrives and is logged in the SendGrid console.
- Save the key when you create it. SendGrid only shows it once.
- Old accounts: some are on an earlier platform that does not support API v3. Ask SendGrid whether yours can use it or needs to be migrated.
Bounces and complaints that update your subscribers
The addon configures SendGrid to notify your site of bounces, complaints and other events that change a subscriber's status. Technically it is a webhook.
There is one detail on free accounts: they only allow one webhook. If a notice appears in the addon configuration saying the maximum has been reached, delete the existing webhook in SendGrid and save the addon settings again so it is created automatically.
Deciding if it fits: requirements and common questions
It is an add-on: it does not work on its own. It needs the Newsletter plugin installed and your own SendGrid account. It does not replace the campaign editor or list management, it only changes how emails go out and how bounce notices come back.
Do I have to pay for SendGrid?
SendGrid changes its plans and pricing from time to time, so check which one fits your volume. Trial or free options usually exist, but check the current conditions on their website.
What do I do about SendGrid's unsubscribe link?
SendGrid can add its own unsubscribe link to each email, separate from the plugin's process. Since Newsletter handles unsubscriptions with its own tags, you can disable SendGrid's link in the tracking settings of its console.
Can I use the API with an old SendGrid account?
It depends on the account. If it is on the old platform, ask their support to migrate it to the new one.
What happens if I enable the addon without testing it?
Newsletter will start sending through SendGrid right away. If the key or permissions fail, your campaigns may not go out, which is why the connection test comes first.
