About Newsletter SparkPost Addon
Newsletter SparkPost Addon: send your emails through a delivery service instead of your hosting
Sending a newsletter from WordPress often works in testing and fails where it matters: emails that arrive late, end up in spam or go out in fits and starts once the list grows. This addon connects the Newsletter plugin to SparkPost, a mail delivery service, so that sending goes out through that service.
Whoever runs a newsletter on a blog spends hours writing and barely a few minutes thinking about how the message travels. Yet delivery is the invisible half of the job: if an email doesn't arrive, nobody tells you, readership simply drops. Handing delivery over to a specialized service removes that blind spot.
Validating the domain is one of the two most important steps
To send with SparkPost, as with any other delivery service, you have to validate the domain you write from. In the SparkPost console you add the domain (without www) and get a set of records that must be created in your DNS.
- If you don't know how to edit DNS, copy that information and ask your hosting provider to do it.
- Do not use a subdomain, even if SparkPost suggests it, and do not set up a bounce domain.
- Validation can take a while: check the domain list afterwards to see whether it is validated or shows an error.
The API key is only shown once
Once the domain is validated, you create an API key in the keys section of your SparkPost account. Here is a detail that causes headaches: when creating it you must enable the suppression list and transmission permissions.
SparkPost shows you the key only once, so copy it right away. Then you paste it into the addon and run the built-in connection test. If it succeeds, you enable the extension; if it fails, read the error message and check whether your SparkPost console shows warnings about the account.
Turbo send: more speed, with a limit to respect
The turbo send option launches concurrent sending. You can choose between 2 and 10 mail processors, and SparkPost recommends not going above 10. In the best case, delivery speed can be multiplied by ten.
Two cautions: on limited shared hosting it may not work, so test it before leaving it on. And the maximum emails per hour you set in Newsletter's main settings is always respected, so that value should not exceed what your SparkPost account allows.
You need Newsletter and a SparkPost account: the addon only acts as a bridge
It helps to be clear about what it solves and what you still have to cover:
- The addon solves: the integration of Newsletter with SparkPost, the connection test and optional concurrent sending.
- You cover: the Newsletter plugin.
- You cover: the SparkPost account and any warning the console shows about it.
- You or your hosting cover: the DNS records needed to validate the domain.
Questions before connecting Newsletter to SparkPost
Does it work without the Newsletter plugin?
No. It is an addon for Newsletter, and without that plugin it has nothing to connect to.
How long does domain validation take?
It can take a while. The sensible approach is to check the domain list in SparkPost later to see whether it is validated or shows an error.
Can I use a subdomain to send?
Do not use the subdomain that SparkPost suggests and do not set up a bounce domain.
Can I enable turbo send on any hosting?
Not always. On limited shared hosting it may not work, so run a test before enabling it for good.
