About Newsletter Subscribe on Comments Addon

Commenters have raised their hand, but they never asked for your newsletter

A blog usually has a subscription form in the sidebar that almost nobody touches, while the readers who do write comments, the most engaged ones, leave without a trace. Capturing them right when they comment seems logical, but it has a catch: people who comment want to talk, not to receive emails, and they type their address in passing, sometimes made up.

Newsletter Subscribe on Comments Addon is an add-on for the Newsletter plugin that handles the technical part and forces you to decide the hard one: how much friction you accept and what quality of list you want.

How Newsletter Subscribe on Comments Addon works in your form

It adds a subscription checkbox to the standard WordPress comment form. For it to make sense, email must be a required field on comments. This is what happens behind the scenes:

  • The subscription is processed after the WordPress and Akismet spam check. If the comment is marked as spam, it is ignored.
  • If the email is already in your contact database, nothing happens: the process is skipped and the profile (name, lists, etc.) is not modified.
  • If you delete the comment, the subscription stays as it was.
  • If a comment changes from spam to not spam, the original subscription request is not recovered.

The normal commenting flow does not change: WordPress reloads the page and may show notices such as the one for a comment awaiting moderation.

Checkbox ticked by default: more sign-ups, more fake ones

You can decide whether the checkbox appears already ticked. Ticked can bring people who did not know they were signing up, so it depends on what your readers are like.

The confirmation mode can be forced or left as set in the general configuration. If you work with single opt-in and see many fake emails in comments (even in real comments), consider forcing double opt-in.

The welcome email can be disabled, which is useful if another plugin already notifies the commenter, but only with single opt-in. With double opt-in the full confirmation and welcome process is followed.

Lists are optional: you can associate zero, one or several with the new subscriber. They are useful for separating highly active readers and writing to them differently.

The comment form does not support a privacy checkbox

This is what you should be clear about before activating it:

What it solves:

  • A subscription checkbox in the standard comment form.
  • Single or double opt-in, optional lists and a configurable welcome email.
  • Spam comments filtered out before subscribing.

What you will have to cover yourself:

  • A separate privacy checkbox: it is not supported. You can put something like "I want to subscribe and I accept the privacy policy" in the label text, with a link to your page.
  • Extra fields or public lists: they are not supported in the form. One option is to send a welcome email with the profile link so the subscriber can complete their details.
  • A different list depending on the page where the comment is left: not possible.
  • Redirecting to another page after commenting: not available, and themes or plugins with AJAX submission would not fit a forced redirection.

Common questions about Newsletter Subscribe on Comments Addon

The checkbox does not appear, what is going on?

The checkbox is inserted with the standard hooks of the WordPress comment form. Ask your theme developer whether their form is compatible with the comment_form_submit_field hook.

The checkbox shows up but the subscription is not saved

First test with an email you are sure is not in your database. Then check whether your theme uses its own comment system: the comment_post event must fire, as WordPress does.

What happens if the commenter is already subscribed?

Nothing: the subscription is skipped and their profile is not touched.

Does it work without the Newsletter plugin?

No, it is an add-on for the Newsletter plugin and uses its subscription settings, lists and emails.
