About OMGF PRO – Speed up Google Fonts, the Right Way
Google Fonts that slip through even when you already host them locally
Many sites believe they have sorted out Google Fonts and still send their visitors' IP addresses to Google, because a theme or plugin loads the font in a way nobody checked. Other times the problem is text that jumps while the page loads, or font weights that no page actually uses. OMGF Pro tackles all three from a single plugin.
In Europe this matters: a German court ruling from January 2022 found that loading fonts from Google's servers breaches the GDPR. Hosting the fonts on your own server is the way to keep using them. Keep in mind that the plugin is a technical tool and does not by itself guarantee your site's legal compliance.
Finds fonts in @import, JavaScript and inline styles
The free version of OMGF already hosts fonts added the standard WordPress way. OMGF Pro goes further and finds fonts in:
- @import and @font-face statements, in your theme's and plugins' stylesheets (also when another domain serves them).
- Inline styles and fonts loaded with JavaScript or WebFont Loader.
- Material Icons and Material Symbols.
- Bunny Fonts, WordPress.com fonts and the WordPress Font Library.
You don't have to tell it where to look: you click Save & Optimize, the plugin scans the site, switches on what it needs and the dashboard shows what it found. After that it processes every page automatically. It works with Elementor, Divi, Avada, Bricks, Beaver Builder and block themes.
Smart Optimize and Magic Fallbacks: less CSS and no jumping text
Most sites load the same fonts on every page, whether that page uses them or not. Smart Optimize looks at what each page shows, separately on mobile and desktop, and:
- Preloads the fonts that are seen first, so text appears sooner and Largest Contentful Paint improves.
- Removes the weights and styles the page doesn't use.
- Skips entire stylesheets if they turn out to be unused.
It analyzes each page once, on its first visit, and reuses the result for every other visitor. It also clears the page cache automatically with WP Rocket, LiteSpeed, W3 Total Cache, FlyingPress, Kinsta, SiteGround or Cloudflare.
Magic Fallbacks targets Cumulative Layout Shift: for every Google Font it creates a system fallback font mathematically tuned to its proportions, so when the real font arrives the text barely moves. It adds them to every font stack on the site, including those of the theme, the page builder and inline styles. With the option to apply font-display globally (swap on every font, not only Google's), the text is visible from the start.
Is the Pro version worth it over the free one?
If your site only loads fonts the standard WordPress way, the free version may be enough. Pro makes sense when there are fonts in stylesheets, JavaScript or inline styles, or when you want per-page optimization and fallback fonts. For agencies it includes Developer Mode (moving a site between development, staging and production without refreshing caches), Multisite, WPML and TranslatePress support, Modify Source URL to serve fonts from a CDN or a custom path, and stylesheets without visible branding.
Does it work for any web font?
No. It is built for Google Fonts and the compatible fonts mentioned above. The font-display setting does affect every font on the site.
Do I have to configure each font by hand?
No: after the first scan it switches on what is needed. Even so, it's worth checking the dashboard to see what it found and testing the result on your key pages.
What if I install another plugin that loads a new font?
The free Google Fonts Checker detects it and warns you with a stoplight in the admin bar.
Does it guarantee a perfect speed score?
No. It improves how fonts load, but the overall result depends on the rest of your site: images, scripts, hosting and caching.
