About Paid Member Subscriptions - Discount Codes Add-on
The discount that costs you money forever
In an ordinary shop, a fifty per cent coupon costs half a sale and that is that. In a subscription it does not: if the discount also applies to renewals, that customer will pay half every month for as long as they stay. A badly configured coupon does not discount a sale, it discounts an entire customer.
This add-on brings discount codes to Paid Member Subscriptions, and its most important setting is exactly that: whether the discount applies only to the first payment or to all of them.
What can be configured
- Percentage or fixed amount, and at a hundred per cent the subscription becomes free.
- First payment only or renewals too, the decision that moves the most money.
- Total uses and uses per person, so a code does not get shared indefinitely.
- Start and expiry dates, for time-limited campaigns.
- New members only, excluding renewals, or the reverse, only for returning ones.
- By plan, choosing which subscriptions accept each code.
Codes apply at registration, when upgrading, when retrying a failed payment and at purchase.
How to use it well
To acquire. A discount on the first month, leaving renewals untouched. The customer comes in cheap and from the second payment pays what it is worth. It is the standard formula and it works.
To recover. The setting for applying it on a failed payment retry is the most underused. When somebody's card gets declined and they are about to leave without meaning to, a rescue code in that email recovers customers who had no intention of going.
To upgrade. A discount available only when moving up a plan is the clean way to shift people to the tier above without giving anything away to whoever was already there.
First things first
It is an add-on: it needs Paid Member Subscriptions installed, the plugin handling the subscriptions, the content restriction and the billing. On its own it does nothing.
