About Paid Memberships Pro WordPress Plugin
Charging for content without building a payment system by hand
Selling access often starts with a spreadsheet of members, bank transfer payments and passwords sent by email, until someone fails to renew and nobody knows whether they should still see the content.
People who install this usually already have something others want (articles, courses, videos, newsletters, a member directory) and lack the administrative side. A common mistake is designing complicated levels before knowing what each member is really buying. First think about what they pay for: reading, downloading, attending, learning or receiving coaching.
Free, one-time or recurring levels on the same site
Levels can be free or paid, one-time or recurring, with trial periods or payment plans. You can have a single level or twenty, and you decide what is members-only and what each level costs. Some example combinations:
- Free reader: open articles and a weekly email.
- Monthly member: every article and video with recurring billing.
- Full course: lifetime access with a one-time payment.
- Annual with trial: all content plus the community, with free trial days.
For visitors who are not yet members, you can show teasers and keep the full text for those who sign up.
What you can protect and what Paid Memberships Pro connects with
The plugin restricts articles, videos, downloads, lessons and more. To charge, it includes gateways such as Stripe, PayPal, Paystack, CCBill and manual payment. Depending on the content type, it relies on integrations: courses with PMPro Courses, LearnDash or LifterLMS; events with The Events Calendar or Events Manager; downloads built in or with Download Monitor.
There are also free and premium Add Ons to extend functionality, and integrations with other plugins and page builders. It suits very different cases: associations and nonprofits, blogs and news, communities, courses and coaching, member directories, paid newsletters, podcasts and video.
What to decide before choosing Paid Memberships Pro
It is a good choice if you want to control your own site and your own member data, with open source code and no dependence on a closed platform. It is less convenient if you expect an all-inclusive service without touching anything: the plugin alone does not take care of your hosting, backups, security or updates. You manage that on your own server.
Nor does it magically turn a site into a business: you define the levels, the content and the sales copy. And some formats (courses, events) need another plugin in addition to this one.
Can I start without paying anything?
Yes: the base plugin can be used for free, with the free Add Ons and the included gateways. Some premium Add Ons and additional features are separate.
Does it work for recurring charges and one-time payments?
Yes, both, plus free levels, trial periods and payment plans.
Do I need another plugin to sell courses?
You can use PMPro Courses, LearnDash, LifterLMS or others. For structured courses, decide which one before creating the levels.
Does it work with my page builder and current plugins?
It connects with many plugins and page builders. To be sure about yours, test them in a demo before committing to the site design.
