About Payment Gateway Based Fees and Discounts for WooCommerce Pro
Every gateway costs you differently and your customer doesn't know it
Getting paid through PayPal, by card or by bank transfer doesn't cost you the same, yet the customer sees the same price in the cart. When margins are tight, that difference comes out of your pocket every time someone picks the method that is most expensive for you.
Payment Gateway Based Fees and Discounts for WooCommerce Pro lets you pass that difference on to whoever causes it, or reward with a discount the method that is cheap for you. At heart, the payment method is a pricing decision: you can push it in the direction that suits you instead of quietly absorbing it.
Three stores, three uses of Payment Gateway Based Fees and Discounts
The tight-margin store
Add a fixed fee, a percentage of the cart total or both at once (for example, 3.9% plus 0.30). That way you cover the gateway commission without touching the product price.
The store that prefers bank transfers
Apply a discount to a specific method, such as 2% for bank transfer. It works like a cashback for whoever chooses the route that costs you the least.
The store that sells in several countries
The fee can depend on the customer's country or state (one percentage for payments outside the US and another for those inside), on the product category, or on whether the card is domestic or international.
Rules that fine-tune when the fee is charged
- Cards: you can tell them apart by issuing country, by bank (detected with a BIN lookup) and by network (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, RuPay and others), with gateways such as Stripe, PayPal, Braintree or Authorize.Net.
- Scope: a global fee for all gateways, or per product, supporting both the standard WooCommerce gateways and custom ones. Also by categories, with the option to exclude some.
- Limits: skip the fee if the subtotal doesn't reach a minimum, or if the fee would exceed a maximum you set.
- Order context: charge or not depending on whether a coupon is applied or on the shipping method.
- Calculation: add taxes to the fee, exclude shipping from the base, and for fixed per-product fees choose between charging them once or multiplying them by quantity.
You can also display the fee information on the product page. It's the way to avoid abandonment caused by a surprise at payment, because the customer already knows what they will see. At checkout, the labels can go with the product title or the variation.
Common questions before setting up fees
Can I charge a fixed amount plus a percentage? Yes, you can define several fees for the same gateway, for example a percentage plus a few cents.
Does it work with non-default gateways? Yes, the per-product setting supports standard WooCommerce gateways and custom ones.
Can I use discounts as well as fees? Yes, both work per gateway, and the discount acts as a cashback for the method you choose.
Can I leave certain gateways out? Yes, you can exclude the ones you don't want to carry a fee.
It doesn't lower what the gateway charges you
The plugin doesn't negotiate or reduce commissions: it only adds a fee or discount line to the order to offset them. Also, in some countries surcharging by payment method is restricted or prohibited, especially for consumer card payments. Check the rules in your market before turning it on.
