About PeepSo Core: Photos
Every new member is also a tenant on your disk
You open photos to your community and the feed comes alive: someone shares a dinner, someone else a trip. Each image seems like nothing. Months go by, more people join, and your hosting space starts to shrink without you having published a thing.
An ordinary website grows when you publish. A community grows when everyone else publishes, and their files take up your server. PeepSo Photos adds photos and albums to PeepSo, along with the settings that decide how much each member can take up. They are worth setting on day one, before there is anyone to cut back.
Photos in the feed, in albums and on a shared page
- Photos in posts: the postbox gains a Photo post type that accepts one or several images. After uploading, the photo can be rotated, given a privacy level and a short description.
- Albums on the profile: from Photos in the profile menu, each member creates an album with a name, an optional description and a location if that feature is on.
- Per-album privacy: Public, Site Members or Only Me.
- Photos page: gathers the community's latest photos for logged-in users. It is created with the PeepSo Photos block or the [peepso_photos] shortcode.
The per-person caps that protect your hosting
They live in WP Admin under PeepSo, Configuration, Photos, and each setting controls something different:
- Maximum Upload Size In Megabytes: the total size of one upload batch, 20 MB by default.
- Allowed Space Per User In Megabytes: the space each user receives.
- Maximum Number Of Photos Per User: how many photos each person can upload.
- Daily Photo Upload Limit Per User: the daily maximum, meant as a brake on spam.
- Storage per member: an option shows under WP-Admin, Users, how much each person takes up.
Where and how each image is stored
Photo Upload Behaviour offers two modes. Use Original publishes the photo at its original size. Resize shrinks those that exceed the maximum width and height you define. Image Quality controls the quality of uploaded images, which PeepSo converts to JPG, and Thumbnail Quality does the same for thumbnails such as those in the feed. If your community revolves around photography, compare an original with the result before settling on these values.
You can also move photos to Amazon S3. It takes an AWS account, a bucket and an IAM user with an access key. You can keep a copy on your server or leave them only on S3, so images load from there and you save your server's bandwidth. Keep this risk in mind: if you enable Don't keep a local copy of uploaded files and later disable S3, the photos disappear, because they are not downloaded again.
PeepSo installed and the caps decided
Photos is an add-on for PeepSo. PeepSo asks for a standalone WordPress installation, since it does not support multisite, and recommends the ImageMagick library on the server. With that ready, the order is this:
- Activate Photos and go to PeepSo, Configuration, Photos.
- Define the batch size, the space per user, the number of photos and the daily limit.
- Choose Use Original or Resize and adjust the quality.
- Publish a test photo to the feed and create an album to check each privacy level.
- If you want the shared page, create it with the PeepSo Photos block and assign it under Configuration, Navigation & Filters.
Finer permissions and other communities
PeepSo User Limits can disable photo uploads until a member reaches the profile completion percentage you define. For sharing documents, File Uploads is another PeepSo piece, with its own size and space limits.
If your community runs on Ultimate Member, User Photos adds albums with their own privacy, comments and likes to each profile.
Answers for whoever runs the community
How much can a member upload at once?
A batch accepts 20 MB by default, and you can change that figure in the Photos settings.
Can photos be stored off my server?
Yes, in an Amazon S3 bucket, with or without a local copy. Without a local copy, disabling S3 makes the photos disappear.
Can I require a complete profile before allowing photo uploads?
Yes, with User Limits, which restricts uploads until the percentage you define is reached.
Can I use it on a multisite network?
No. PeepSo needs a standalone WordPress installation.
