About PMPRO Add Name to Checkout
When your community only knows its members by username
A membership sign-up form usually asks for a username, an email and a password, and nothing else. You notice the result months later: emails greeting "jgarcia84", a member directory full of aliases, certificates when you don't know whose name to put on them. People who build an association or a community often find this out when they already have hundreds of sign-ups without a real name.
PMPRO Add Name to Checkout fixes it at the source: it adds First Name and Last Name fields to the Paid Memberships Pro checkout form, so you collect the data right when the person joins.
Two fields inside "Account Information", with nothing to configure
The plugin places First Name and Last Name in the same checkout section where username, email and password already are, so the form doesn't look like it has something stuck on at the end. It has no settings screen: you activate it and the fields appear.
Both are required by default. If you want either one to be optional, there are two filters for code, pmproan2c_first_name_required and pmproan2c_last_name_required, which return true out of the box. A developer only needs a few lines.
Existing members can change their first and last name on the frontend profile edit page. That page already shows those fields by default, so you don't need this plugin for that.
What knowing the real name is good for
- Personalizing emails, newsletters or membership cards.
- Showing real names in a member directory or in community profiles, where aliases reduce trust between people.
- Speeding up entry and attendee check-in if you organize events.
- Issuing certificates or recognitions in the right person's name.
- Helping whoever writes to your team better, because you know who you're talking to.
It fits associations and communities above all, and also courses and member directories. On a site where nobody sees anybody else's name, it is probably unnecessary.
It needs Paid Memberships Pro and only adds two fields
What it already solves:
- First Name and Last Name at checkout, inside the account information.
- Both required from the start.
- Name editing by current members on their profile.
What you cover yourself:
- It is an add-on: it doesn't work without Paid Memberships Pro installed and active.
- Phone, company, address or other data require the Paid Memberships Pro User Fields or another solution.
- Making a field optional requires code with the filters above, there is no switch.
- Collecting a name doesn't verify it: anyone can type whatever they want.
- Making the full name the account's public name is a separate setting, solved elsewhere.
- If you collect the name for regulatory reasons, check with a professional what your case requires; the plugin only adds the fields.
Common questions about first and last name at checkout
Can I ask only for the first name and not the last name?
Yes, but with code: the last name filter lets you make it not required.
Does it fill in the names of members I already have?
It doesn't fill them in for you. Current members can add them from the profile edit page, which already includes those fields.
Does it have options in the WordPress dashboard?
No, it has no settings. You activate it and it works.
Does it work if a member can hold several active levels?
It is designed for sites where members can hold one or more active membership levels.
