About PMPRO Add PayPal Express at Checkout
Many members hesitate before handing over a card for a charge that repeats
A card form on a membership site asks for more than one in a shop: it does not authorize a single purchase, it authorizes charges that will repeat month after month. Someone who does not know your site hesitates, and that doubt is settled on the checkout page, not on your sales page.
PMPro Add PayPal Express at Checkout adds that path to Paid Memberships Pro without removing your card gateway.
A payment method selector in the PMPro checkout
The add-on enables a selector (radio) on the membership checkout page, in a box called Choose Your Payment Method. The member chooses between paying by card or with PayPal Express. Your card gateway stays as the main one and PayPal becomes the secondary option.
- More options, one form: the member decides on the same checkout, without going through another selection page.
- Saved credentials: your PayPal account email, API Username, API Password and API Signature are stored.
- Brand recognition: many people recognize PayPal and associate it with a protected purchase, which helps when your brand is new to them.
Three sites, three different decisions
You already take cards and want more people to pay
This is the case it was built for: you leave your gateway as it is and add PayPal for those who prefer not to type their card.
You sell one-time levels and recurring levels
Each type of level behaves differently when charged, so testing one is not enough. Make a real purchase of each type before announcing anything.
You are building the site from scratch
Think twice: this integration is marked as deprecated (see below). For a new project, look first at the newer PayPal Gateway add-on from PMPro.
Setting up PMPro Add PayPal Express at Checkout takes a detour
PayPal Express only saves its credentials when it is the main gateway. That is why it is done in two passes: first you choose it as the gateway in the Memberships payment settings, enter your account details and save; then you go back to your usual gateway. The PayPal details stay stored and the selector appears at checkout.
Then make a purchase yourself with PayPal. You can use a coupon that brings the charge down to 1 dollar to reduce fees, and refund it afterwards.
Frequently asked questions before installing it
Does it work if PayPal Express is my main gateway? No. The add-on only works when the main gateway is a different one.
Can I use it without Paid Memberships Pro? No. It is a PMPro add-on and needs the plugin installed and active.
How do I know it charges correctly? By making a real purchase with PayPal. If you have one-time and recurring levels, test both.
Does it replace my card gateway? No. It is an additional option alongside it.
Deprecated integration: it is expected to eventually fail
Paid Memberships Pro has stopped maintaining this integration, warns that something is likely to break over time and recommends moving to the new PayPal Gateway add-on. If you already use it, plan the migration; if you are starting today, evaluate that alternative before relying on this one for real payments.
