About PMPRO Auto-Renewal Checkbox
People who distrust subscriptions never get as far as paying
Some buyers want to pay for one month without giving anyone permission to charge them for the next.
PMPRO Auto-Renewal Checkbox adds a checkbox to the Paid Memberships Pro checkout so the member can choose between automatic renewal and a one-time payment for a fixed period. If they tick it, a subscription is created at the gateway and they are billed on a recurring basis. If not, their membership expires at the end of one billing cycle.
Three ways the checkbox can behave in PMPRO Auto-Renewal Checkbox
It is configured level by level, under Auto-Renewal Settings in Other Settings, inside the level edit screen:
- No: every payment creates recurring billing and the member doesn't see a one-time payment option. This is the default behavior.
- Yes, unchecked: the checkbox appears empty and the member must turn on automatic renewal by their own choice.
- Yes, checked: the checkbox appears ticked and the member has to untick it if they prefer to pay only once.
Once it's configured, you can see how it looks in Memberships > Settings > Levels by clicking the "Yes" for the level, which opens its checkout in another tab.
Renewing before expiry doesn't cost the member any days
Paid Memberships Pro already extends fixed-term memberships when someone buys the same plan again. If a member has an annual plan that expires in 14 days, the new checkout extends it by one year plus those 14 days, with no custom code.
The add on applies the same logic when the member opts for automatic payment: the renewal is calculated from their current expiration date, so the new annual billing period starts 14 days after checkout rather than immediately.
A fixed expiration date or a subscription delay needs two more add ons
Before installing it, it helps to be clear about who covers what:
- Already solved: the checkbox at checkout, expiry after one cycle if the member doesn't tick it, and the membership extension on renewal.
- Covered with other add ons: if the level has a specific expiration date or a subscription delay, you need Set Expiration Date and Subscription Delays, with the same value in both. If the member turns on automatic renewal, this add on ignores that date or delay.
- Covered by you: having Paid Memberships Pro installed and active, leaving the level without an expiration date (the add on sets one only when the member doesn't tick the checkbox) and deciding how to remind or persuade people who pay only once.
- Not needed: if all your levels use recurring billing with no option to choose.
Frequently asked questions about PMPRO Auto-Renewal Checkbox
Do I need it to have recurring subscriptions?
No. Paid Memberships Pro already supports levels with recurring billing. This add on is only needed if you want a single level to let members choose between automatic renewal and a one-time payment.
Can I enable it on only some levels?
Yes, the setting is on each level's edit screen, so you can have levels with the checkbox and others with mandatory recurring billing.
What happens if the member doesn't tick the checkbox?
Their membership is set to expire after one billing cycle. If your level costs $10 a month, they pay for one month and access ends after that month.
Does it work with levels that already have an expiration date?
Only if you also use Set Expiration Date and Subscription Delays, with the delay and the expiration set to the same value.
Does it work if a member can hold several levels at once?
Yes, it is designed for sites where members can hold one or more active levels.
