About PMPRO Email Confirmation Addon

Free accounts that inflate your member count

Opening a free level brings in signups, but not all of them are people: there are made-up addresses, mistyped emails and bots. You end up with a list of "members" who will never receive your emails and a number that is no use for making decisions.

PMPRO Email Confirmation Addon adds a step to signup: the new member must click a link in the confirmation email before accessing protected content. If you publish a paid newsletter or a blog with free levels, your member count starts to reflect addresses that exist and that someone actually reads.

How PMPRO Email Confirmation Addon works during signup

When someone signs up for a level with validation turned on, they receive the membership confirmation email with a validation link. Until they validate their address, they cannot access members-only content.

It is configured level by level, so you can require it only where it matters to you, for example on free levels:

  • Edit the level under Memberships > Settings > Levels and open Other Settings.
  • Check the Email Confirmation box.
  • If you wish, require a new validation when the user changes their email.

Validate manually when the member can't find the email

The administrator or the Membership Manager can validate any user with the Validate User button, which appears on the Memberships > Members screen and in the WordPress Users list. It is the shortcut for that member who writes to say nothing has arrived.

Members can also request a new email from their Membership Account page. For that, the addon includes its own template, Resend Email Confirmation, which you can word in your brand's voice.

If you customized the checkout email, the link is up to you

The addon automatically adds the validation link to checkout emails, but if you have modified them it may not be able to insert it. In that case, edit the relevant Checkout template under Memberships > Settings > Email Templates (depending on whether the level is free or paid, or on the gateway) and add the variable !!validation_link!!.

The same goes for Resend Email Confirmation: if you remove that variable, the member gets an email that doesn't let them complete validation.

It verifies the email, not the person: anti-spam is still on you

Confirming an address proves it exists and that someone can access it, nothing more. It's worth being clear on this before installing:

  • Already solved: the validation link in the signup email, blocking content until validation, manual validation from the dashboard and resending the email from the member's account.
  • You cover it: having Paid Memberships Pro installed and active (the addon doesn't work on its own), adding other protections against junk signups (it works alongside them, it doesn't replace them), configuring each level separately and manually adjusting any email templates you have customized.

Questions from people who already have PMPro running

Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?

No. It is an add-on for Paid Memberships Pro and needs that plugin installed and active.

Do I have to require validation on every level?

No. It is turned on in each level's settings, so you can ask for it on some and leave others without that step.

What does a member who hasn't validated yet see?

They can't open members-only content until they click the link or you validate them from the dashboard.

Can I skip validation for a specific user?

Yes. From Memberships > Members or the Users list you can validate them with the Validate User button.
