About PMPRO Import Users from CSV

Migrating a member list without breaking recurring payments

Switching membership systems usually ends the same way: you export a spreadsheet, hope the levels line up, and weeks later discover that some members no longer pay. Redoing it by hand, user by user, is slow and full of typos.

In a membership business your asset is not the email list, but the subscriptions that already bill every month. PMPRO Import Users from CSV is built so that link is not lost when you move members to Paid Memberships Pro, as long as the source platform allows it.

What PMPRO Import Users from CSV does with each row of your file

It is an add-on for Paid Memberships Pro. You can:

  • Create new users in WordPress from your list.
  • Assign or update membership levels during the import, without opening each profile.
  • Keep active subscriptions for people who already pay, instead of starting from scratch.
  • Import custom fields and user metadata.

Before you start there is a settings screen to prepare the upload, and the process runs via AJAX in the WordPress admin. If you are a developer, action and filter hooks are available to adapt its behavior.

Three starting points, three ways to use it

You are coming from another membership plugin

This is the most delicate case. Export members, levels and dates, and prepare the columns so each person keeps their access. If you also want to keep the current expiration date as the renewal date, decide that before loading anything.

You have a spreadsheet of members

An association, a club or a course that kept its roster in Excel can prepare it as a CSV to import it.

You already use PMPro and update data in bulk

It also helps update data for existing users: the plugin updates, not just creates.

Common questions before uploading your first CSV

Do I need Paid Memberships Pro installed?

Yes. It is an add-on for that plugin and does not work on its own.

Will my members have to enter their card again?

It depends on where they come from. When active subscriptions can be preserved, they keep billing without the member doing anything. If they cannot, you will need to plan how to bring them back.

Can I import my own fields?

Yes, custom fields and user metadata. Those stored as arrays require specific handling.

Is it for people who cannot code?

You can use it without code, but it requires configuring several settings and, depending on the case, some basic WordPress and PHP knowledge.

Does it work if a member has several levels?

It is designed for sites where a member can hold one or more active levels.

Some platforms' subscriptions cannot be transferred

A CSV does not move payments by itself. Platforms such as WooCommerce Subscriptions or most SaaS tools create subscriptions that cannot be transferred to another system, not even with the same gateway. In those cases, the realistic route is to set expiration dates, notify members and use PMPro's renewal flow so they reactivate their subscription. You keep your members, but not the automatic billing.
