About PMPRO Variable Pricing Addon

When a fixed price shuts out people who wanted to support you

Setting a single fee for a membership forces you to pick between two mistakes: set it high and lose those who would give less, or set it low and leave money on the table from those who would give more. For organizations that live on contributions, that closed number is almost always too much or too little.

PMPRO Variable Pricing Addon turns the price of a Paid Memberships Pro level into a field the person fills in at checkout.

What members see at checkout with PMPRO Variable Pricing Addon

Once the option is enabled on a level, checkout shows an amount field. You decide three values:

  • Minimum price: the lowest amount accepted; nobody can enter less.
  • Maximum price (optional): a cap to prevent disproportionate amounts.
  • Suggested price (optional): it appears already filled in and the person can change it.

The chosen amount replaces both the initial payment and the recurring fee, if the level is a subscription. If you suggest 10 a month and someone enters 15, 15 is charged every month. Watch out for this: a minimum of 1 will also repeat on every renewal. With two developer filters you can change the descriptive text and the label of the field, for example to explain what the money is used for.

Three businesses where paying what you can makes sense

A cultural organization with patrons

People who support a theater or an arts collective often want to give more than a regular member fee, while others can only afford the basics. A single level covers both without creating artificial steps.

A nonprofit

A pay what you want membership keeps the fee from being a barrier and leaves the door open for those who can to give more.

A community with free contributions

If you would rather not build several levels with fixed prices, a single level with a defined range works as an open contribution and keeps your catalog simple.

Questions that come up before enabling it

Can I prevent amounts that are too low?

Yes. The minimum price is set on the level itself and the field does not accept anything lower.

What happens in a subscription if someone chooses a different amount?

That amount is charged on the initial payment and on every renewal, not just the first time.

Can I use it on a level I already created?

Yes. The option is enabled in the level settings, whether the level is new or already exists.

Can I change the text of the field?

Yes, through two filters.

PMPRO Variable Pricing Addon only changes the amount, not the cycle

It needs Paid Memberships Pro installed and active: it does not work on its own. It does not modify trial periods, billing cycles or expiration; only the initial and recurring payments. It also does not offer predefined contribution tiers: it is a free field within your range. If you prefer buttons with fixed amounts, you will need another solution.
