About Powerful Filters for wpDataTables
You have a catalog of thousands of rows in a WordPress table, and the visitor arrives, sees a wall of data and leaves without finding what they wanted. Or worse: they pick a brand, then a model, and the dropdown offers combinations that don't exist. Powerful Filters for wpDataTables fixes exactly that: it changes how the filters on your tables behave.
A real walkthrough: a parts or product finder, step by step
Picture a large table with columns such as category, brand and model. Here is how the addon would be used, step by step:
Step 1: the visitor only sees the filters
With the option to hide the table before filtering, the page shows only the filters. The table appears once a selection is made. It makes sense when nobody needs to see the full dataset.
Step 2: each selection trims the next options
In dependent cascade filtering, choices are made from left to right and each selection narrows down the options of the next filter.
Step 3: or let them choose in whatever order they like
The independent mode works like Excel or Google Sheets: you can start from any filter and all the others adjust. It is better if your visitors don't know where to start, for example if some search by model and others by category.
Step 4: launch the search when everything is chosen
By default, wpDataTables updates the table as soon as a filter changes. With the search button, the table is only filtered when it is clicked. You can also disable that button until all filters have been filled in, so nobody runs a half-finished query. This option works together with the search button.
The truth about the catalog business: the problem isn't the data, it's the journey
Whoever publishes a long catalog often thinks the job is done once the data is imported. But visitors don't read a table: they interrogate it. If every question returns noise, they conclude the catalog doesn't have what they're looking for, even if it does.
It needs the full version of wpDataTables to work
Powerful Filters for wpDataTables is not a standalone plugin: it is an add-on that requires the full version of wpDataTables. Without that base plugin it does nothing. It doesn't create tables or import data either: it only changes how the tables you've already built are filtered.
Frequently asked questions before installing it
Is it useful for small tables?
It adds little. Its value lies in extensive data where browsing without guidance tires the visitor.
Can I choose between dependent and independent cascade?
Yes, they are two different cascade filtering modes. Choose the one that fits how your audience searches.
Can I stop the table from updating on every click?
Yes: with the search button, the table is only filtered when it is clicked.
Can the table be hidden until it is filtered?
Yes, showing only the filters at first. It is useful for large catalogs where the full listing is of no interest.
When it pays off and when it doesn't
- It pays off if your table works as a finder: parts, properties, listings, directories.
- It pays off if you want to control when the search is launched.
- It doesn't pay off if your visitors only need to see a short, tidy table.
- It doesn't pay off if you don't use the full version of wpDataTables.
