About Real Cookie Banner
Installing a cookie banner that only shows a notice and an accept button solves nothing if, behind it, Google Fonts, a map or an embedded video keep sending visitor data before anyone has said yes. That is what usually happens on a WordPress site where the theme, plugins and third-party content are all mixed together.
Real Cookie Banner: consent has to block, not just warn
On a WordPress site you do not control everything that loads. Your theme, a forms plugin or an iframe pasted into a post can load scripts and styles that transfer personal data on their own. A banner that does not stop that is just decoration. Real Cookie Banner is a consent management plugin designed for WordPress that obtains prior consent (opt-in) under the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, and also runs services only after the visitor has accepted.
Services, content blockers and consent: what each piece does
- Consent management: you store the technical and legal information of each service and cookie so visitors can decide with the facts. It includes more than 160 service templates and more than 130 content blocker templates.
- Content blockers: they stop scripts, styles or iframes from your theme or plugins from running until consent is given.
- Consent documentation: the GDPR requires you to be able to prove that a visitor consented. The plugin records the consent and lets you trace its origin afterwards.
- Guided configuration: after installation, a checklist takes you step by step and explains the legal consequences of changing certain settings.
- Design: more than 20 design templates and more than 200 options (colors, effects, texts) with a live preview.
The templates cover a lot, but not everything
There are templates for common services: Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Fonts, Google Maps, Meta Pixel, YouTube through Smash Balloon, Vimeo, Spotify, Mailchimp, Stripe, WooCommerce, Elementor, Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, Ninja Forms, Hotjar, Matomo or Calendly, among many others. If you use a service that is not listed, you will have to enter its legal and technical information yourself. The plugin helps you organize it, but it does not make it up for you. It also does not replace your privacy policy or guarantee legal compliance on its own: that depends on you configuring correctly what your site actually uses.
Questions from people about to install it
Does the consent data leave my server?
No. It is a native WordPress plugin: consents are processed and stored on your server, and nothing is downloaded from a cloud into the visitor's browser.
Does it work for the GDPR and the EU cookie law?
It is designed to obtain consents in line with the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive. That does not exempt you from reviewing which services your site really loads.
Can I adapt it to my site's design?
Yes: design templates, many options and a live preview of every change.
Do I need legal knowledge?
The guided configuration explains each step and the consequences of changing settings, but decisions about which services you use remain yours.
Start by taking inventory of what your site loads
Before touching the banner design, make a list of what your site loads: analytics, fonts, maps, videos, forms with reCAPTCHA, advertising pixels. Then follow the plugin's checklist, enable the template for each service and the matching blockers, and test the site with the banner left unaccepted to confirm nothing runs ahead of time. Leave the design for last.
