About Real Media Library: Media Library Folder & File Manager for Media Management in WordPress
When your media library is a flat list of thousands of files
At first you upload three photos and find them instantly. A few weeks later, with images, videos, audio and PDFs mixed in a single list, finding a file depends on remembering what you named it. Real Media Library turns that list into something like Windows Explorer or Mac Finder, but inside WordPress.
Folders, collections and galleries: three containers with different rules
The least obvious part of the plugin is that not every container accepts everything. It is worth understanding this before building your structure:
- Folder: can hold any type of file and also collections, but not galleries.
- Collection: does not store files. It is used to group other collections and galleries.
- Gallery: only accepts images. You can drag them into the order you want.
A library gallery is just a data folder: it does not show up on your site by itself. To display it, you create the visual gallery from that folder with a Gutenberg block or a shortcode.
What Real Media Library does with your files and where it stops
These are the features that change your day-to-day work the most:
- Drag and drop files into folders, also on touch screens.
- A toolbar to create, rename and delete folders, and multiple selection to delete several at once.
- Reorder folders and their contents manually or by criterion (name from A to Z, date...), automatically or just once.
- Upload files directly to a specific folder.
- Shortcuts of a file in several folders without taking up extra space.
- Quick folder search and a filter inside the insert media dialog.
- Dynamic galleries generated from a folder, with a Gutenberg block or shortcode.
The limits: folders organize the library, they are not an image editor or a per-user permission system. And since a gallery only accepts images, your PDFs or videos will have to live in regular folders.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import the folders I already have in another plugin?
Yes, it can import categories or folders from plugins such as FileBird, WP Media Folder, Advanced Media Library or Media Library Wizard, among others.
Does it work with my theme and my page builder?
It is compatible with the major themes, page builders and many plugins. Even so, test your specific combination before reorganizing your whole library.
Does it work on a Multisite installation?
Yes. Each site in the network has its own folder tree.
Can a file be in two folders?
Yes, through shortcuts. They do not duplicate the file or use up storage space.
Does it collect personal data?
The plugin does not collect personal data without your consent.
Importing old folders and reorganizing without fear
If you come from another folder plugin, start with the import so you do not have to rebuild the structure by hand. If you start from scratch, design the tree first: a few main folders, subfolders by topic or date, and a collection to group the galleries. Then move your files over in batches by dragging.
Check in the demo how the media picker behaves when you insert an image into a post, because that is where you will use it the most.
