About Relevanssi Premium Plugin
When your site's search can't find what is really there
A visitor types the name of a product, a PDF or an ingredient that sits in your categories, and the WordPress search returns four odd results or none at all. What you published exists, but the native search can't see it. Relevanssi Premium replaces that search with one that looks in more places and lets you decide how the results are ranked.
The content that matters is often outside the main text
Anyone who publishes recipes, catalogs or documentation knows the most searched-for information isn't always in the body of a post: it's in taxonomies, custom fields or inside an attached file. The default search leaves all of that out. Relevanssi Premium widens the reach to:
- PDFs: it reads the text of your PDF files, indexes it and lets people find them by their content. The reading is done by an external web service, so it doesn't burden your server.
- Custom fields: WooCommerce SKUs, ACF fields or other metadata.
- Taxonomies: categories, tags or custom taxonomies, with their archive pages as results.
- User profiles: finds people by name and description.
- Shortcodes: expands shortcodes so the content they generate can be searched.
- Multisite: searches across several subsites in the same network.
Relevanssi Premium: more control over what is searched and how
It's not just about widening the search radius. The plugin offers many filters and actions to adjust its behavior to your case. You can add synonyms, which helps when the same product has different names by region (searching for "courgette" and finding what you wrote as "zucchini"). That's the kind of problem it solves: people searching with their own words, not yours.
It only indexes posts, users and terms
It's worth setting expectations clearly. What Relevanssi Premium covers and what you'll have to solve another way:
- It solves: posts, pages and custom post types; user profiles and taxonomy terms (both in Premium); PDF content.
- It doesn't solve: data stored in another database table that isn't a post, user or term. Relevanssi's basic unit is the post; if something can't be presented as one, it isn't indexed.
- You or a professional cover it: advanced settings require some knowledge of PHP and WordPress templates.
- You check it: some themes aren't 100% compatible with every feature, and certain plugins may conflict. Test the search in your own environment before launching it.
Languages other than English
If your site is in Chinese or Japanese, it's worth checking how Relevanssi behaves with that language before committing to it. Run your own tests with your own content.
