About Science News Portal & Magazine WordPress theme WordPress Theme
A science magazine loses readers when they can't find the next article
Publishing popular science across several areas (space, brain, medicine, technology) often ends up as a flat blog where every piece dies after two days, with mixed categories and a homepage that can't tell featured content from archived content. Globera is designed for that case: a news magazine with themed sections, not a personal diary.
Whoever builds a science magazine competes for something few people plan for: the reading time of a curious person who arrived for a single article. If they finish it without seeing another nearby piece of interest, they leave. That's why the homepage and topic navigation matter more than the design of any single article.
How Globera organizes the homepage and sections
The demo shows a list of latest news and blocks by category. The sample categories are Health & Medicine, Mind & Brain, Space & Physics, Technology, Phenomena and Environment, each with a short intro text and its post count. It works as a model for organizing a magazine with several areas.
- News listing layouts: 2 or 3 column grid, 2 or 3 column masonry and a minimal format. Choose depending on how much intro text you want to show per piece.
- Post formats: standard, video, gallery, quote, link and audio. Useful if you mix articles with video interviews or podcasts.
- Header: three styles to choose from.
- Sidebar: right, left or none.
- Footer: four styles.
Subscription, social networks and reading on any screen
The theme includes an email subscription block, with a confirmation message when someone signs up, and links to social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Vimeo, Google plus and RSS) in the header and footer. It's a good base for turning the occasional reader into a returning one, which is what really counts in a popular science magazine.
It also offers a recent posts area, category listings, tags and numbered pagination to browse the archive. Check it in the demo with your longest articles, which are the ones that suffer most on small screens.
There are also sample pages: About, Typography, Contacts and a 404 page, which save you from starting from scratch.
Is Globera the right base for your magazine?
It fits if you publish news or popular science across several areas and want each section to have its own identity. It fits less if your site is a shop, a portfolio or a corporate site with a secondary news section: here everything revolves around editorial content.
Keep in mind that the dates and articles in the demo are samples; you will have to write the real content, images and category texts yourself. The Google plus references in the social icons are a leftover from the era of the design: replace them with the networks you actually use.
Is it suitable for a personal blog?
Yes, but it's more than you need if you write little. Its value lies in organizing many pieces by topic.
Can I show the news without a sidebar?
Yes, the theme allows a sidebar on the right, on the left or none.
Does it support video or audio posts?
Yes, it includes video and audio post formats, as well as gallery, quote and link.
Does the email subscription send the newsletters?
The theme displays the subscription form. To write and send newsletters you will need a separate email service, and you should check in the demo how it connects.
