About SearchWP Exclude UI

WordPress search shows everything that is published, and you don't want it to

WordPress search indexes all published content by default. That means the thank-you page after a form, a landing page from a campaign that has ended or a product you don't want to push can appear as a result when a visitor searches for something ordinary. The visitor clicks, gets confused and leaves.

The odd thing is that the person who knows what should not appear is the one publishing, at the moment of editing, not whoever tweaks the search weeks later. SearchWP Exclude UI moves the decision to that moment.

A checkbox on the editing screen: how SearchWP Exclude UI works

SearchWP already lets you exclude content, in bulk or one item at a time. This extension brings individual exclusion to the editor: you tick the checkbox on the post, page or product, and that content stops appearing in SearchWP results. No code.

  • Individual exclusion: each post, page or product has its own checkbox, so the decision stays in plain sight of whoever is editing.

Paid, private or store content: where this extension helps

There are two cases where the checkbox clearly pays off:

  • Sites with restricted content: you stop a paid or private resource from being advertised in the internal search results to someone who should not see it.
  • Stores: you take products or pages that only distract out of search and let the customer find what you actually want to sell.

Watch out for a common mix-up: excluding from search is not protecting. The page still exists and anyone with the address can open it. If the content is paid, the access restriction has to come from your membership system, not from this checkbox.

Checkbox by checkbox or bulk rules? Decide before installing

SearchWP Exclude UI is an extension of SearchWP and does not work on its own: you need SearchWP installed, and SearchWP is a plugin for self-hosted WordPress, not WordPress.com. It is a tool for deciding one entry at a time. If you need to exclude whole categories, tags, custom taxonomies or media files, or define which content goes into each search engine, that is configured in the SearchWP settings, not with this checkbox.

If your case is "a few loose pages that must not show up", the checkbox is the most convenient option. If it is "this whole category out", a bulk rule is better.

Does it work without SearchWP?

No. It is an add-on that puts the checkbox on the editing screens, but the exclusion itself is applied by SearchWP.

Can I exclude a whole category with this?

Not with the checkbox, which acts on each piece of content separately. For categories, taxonomies or media, use the SearchWP settings.

Does it hide the page from Google or make it private?

No. It only removes it from your site's search results. The page remains accessible through its address.
