Searching, not finding and leaving: what happens when your search box makes people wait
A visitor types a word into your search box, hits Enter, waits for another page to load and discovers that what they wanted isn't there. Many don't try a second time. With SearchWP Live Ajax Search, results appear while the person is typing.
Keep in mind that it is an extension of SearchWP: the quality of what comes up depends on how the SearchWP search engine behind it is configured.
Autocomplete that turns on by itself and adapts to your design
Once installed from the SearchWP interface, live search starts working without code. After that you can adjust it:
- Pre-made templates for the results, as a visual starting point.
- Dropdown appearance: styling, width and the maximum number of results shown.
- Gutenberg block to add a live search form anywhere on the site.
- Forms with pre-made layouts and flexible styling, if you need to create a new one.
Which suggestions the visitor sees and in what order
This is what gets overlooked most: what matters in a live search isn't that it's fast, but what it puts first. A quick dropdown that suggests the wrong entry doesn't help, it just shows the mistake sooner.
With SearchWP's algorithm and weighting you can give more weight to some content than to other content. You can also fix the order of results for a specific keyword, so your best page or your star product always appears on top when someone types that term.
In shops this is where it shows most. The extension works with WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and BigCommerce, and suggests products as people type. If you sell online, check which words your customers type and decide what you want to show first for each one.
Decide whether SearchWP Live Ajax Search fits your site
Before installing it, check these limits:
- It doesn't work on its own: it needs SearchWP, because it is one of its extensions.
- It doesn't work on WordPress.com, only on self-hosted WordPress (.org) installs.
- By default SearchWP doesn't index author details, although it can be taught to index whatever content you want.

No. It is activated from SearchWP and starts working. For more advanced customization, SearchWP offers hooks and filters.
