About SearchWP PrivateContent Integration
WordPress search doesn't know who is in front of it
You set up a members area with PrivateContent, restrict pages by user group, and yet the site search can still give away what you meant to protect. By default, WordPress search indexes everything on your site, and that doesn't fit content reserved for certain groups.
SearchWP PrivateContent Integration is the piece that connects both worlds: it makes SearchWP understand PrivateContent's restrictions and limit results to the right user groups.
If you sell access by tiers, your search must respect it too
On a site with group-based areas (clients, members, students, distributors), search is the door almost nobody checks. You protect the page, you protect the menu, and then the title or the excerpt shows up in a search. For a visitor without access that is confusing, and for one who does have access, not finding their own content is an annoyance. This integration treats search as one more part of access control, not as an afterthought.
What this integration does with your searches
- Limits results by user group: each person sees in search only what their group can see.
- Hides content from public search: with SearchWP's exclusion settings you can set aside posts, pages and other content types.
- Activates with one click: the integration is enabled without touching code.
What SearchWP adds around it
Because it works on top of SearchWP, you can use its algorithm and indexing settings to decide what weighs most in the results. Other SearchWP features, such as live search with suggestions as you type, custom results order or search analytics, belong to the SearchWP ecosystem.
Analytics are useful in a private area: they show what your members search for and don't find, that is, which content you are missing.
It needs SearchWP and PrivateContent to work
This is an add-on, not a complete search engine. And it helps to be clear about who does what:
- The integration solves: connecting SearchWP with PrivateContent groups so results respect the restrictions.
- You provide with SearchWP: the base search engine, the algorithm configuration and the optional extensions (live search, results order, analytics).
- You provide with PrivateContent: creating the groups, assigning users and defining which content is private.
- You check yourself: test with accounts from each group and a logged-out session, to confirm nobody sees too much or too little.
It doesn't work on WordPress.com either: SearchWP is for self-hosted WordPress.org installs.
Frequently asked questions
Is it useful if I don't use PrivateContent?
No. It is designed for sites that already restrict content by group with PrivateContent.
Can I completely hide certain content from public search?
Yes, SearchWP has exclusion settings to set aside posts, pages and other content from public results.
Do I need to code anything?
No: the integration is activated with one click and is used without code.
Does it work on WordPress.com?
No, only on self-hosted WordPress.org installs.
Does it highlight searched terms in results?
SearchWP can highlight terms and generate excerpts around them, although that is a feature of the base plugin, not of this integration.
