About SUMO Reward Points

Every point you give away is a discount you will pay for later

Setting up a points program seems simple: you give points for buying, the customer spends them and comes back. The problem comes when nobody worked out how much each point is worth and the store finds out it is giving away margin on every order. In a loyalty program, the cost is not set by what you offer, but by the conversion rate and the redemption caps you put in place.

SUMO Reward Points is a points and rewards system built on top of WooCommerce that gives you those controls, plus many ways to earn points.

A walkthrough with SUMO Reward Points: from the first purchase to the second order

Imagine a cosmetics store that wants its customers to buy again. Here is how the program would be set up, step by step.

Step 1: decide how much a point is worth

You define the point conversion rate, one for earning points and another for redeeming them. This is where the real cost of the program is decided, so do it before touching anything else.

Step 2: hand out points where it hurts least

You can give points at global level, by category or by product, as a fixed amount or as a percentage of the price. It works with simple and variable products, and with simple and variable subscriptions. If you already have a catalog, you can apply the options to existing products and categories.

Step 3: reward more than the purchase

Signing up, reviews, blog posts, coupon codes, referrals and social media actions (Facebook, Twitter) can also earn points. In the referral system you can require the member to be x days old before the reward is paid. Before enabling social rewards, check which networks still make sense for your audience.

Step 4: set expiry and redemption limits

Points can expire. You can also require minimum points for the first redemption, a minimum balance, a minimum cart total and a maximum of points per cart. The points payment gateway supports a maximum discount. You can also exclude products or categories from redemption.

Step 5: the customer redeems at checkout

The customer uses their points on the checkout page or through the points payment gateway. Note: coupons must be enabled in WooCommerce or the plugin will not work. If you do not want the customer to see the coupon form in the cart, you can hide it.

Redemption, expiry and languages: what people ask before buying SUMO Reward Points

Beyond the points discount

If you want the program to do more than take money off the cart, there are other pieces:

  • Member levels: to tell your customers apart within the program.
  • Sending and buying points: members can send points to each other and also buy them.
  • Gift vouchers with points: with bulk voucher creation.
  • Strict point pricing and charity nominee: products that can only be paid for with points and a charity nominee feature.
  • SMS, CSV and API: SMS notifications with Twilio or Nexmo, import and export of users and points in CSV, and an API for developers.

It works well with other SUMO plugins, but does not include them

It is compatible with SUMO Subscriptions, SUMO Memberships, SUMO Donations, SUMO Dynamic Pricing Discounts, WooCommerce Recover Abandoned Cart, SUMO WooCommerce Payment Plans and Deposits, SUMO WooCommerce Waitlist, SUMO WooCommerce Custom Registration Fields and SUMO Affiliates Pro.

Each one is a separate plugin: if you want to combine them, you will need to have them installed separately.
