Contests where the audience takes part and votes
A contest is one of the few marketing activities that brings content and audience at the same time: entrants upload material and bring their contacts along to vote for them. The problem is never setting it up, it is stopping it becoming a fraud within twenty-four hours, once somebody works out they can vote for themselves from fifty tabs.
TotalContest covers both halves: collecting entries and controlling the voting.
What you can ask for
Photos, video, audio and written entries. Forms are assembled from up to 10 field types: text, textarea, checkbox, category selection, image, video, audio, rich text, file upload and dropdowns.
And with validations that remove half the moderation work: required fields, email format, uniqueness checks, word filtering, regular expressions, file size and format limits, minimum image dimensions and maximum media length.
Vote control, which is where it is won
This is the part that decides whether the contest works or turns into a joke:
- By cookie, with a configurable timeout.
- By IP address, with whitelists and blacklists and its own timeout.
- By user role, to reserve voting for registered users.
- By date and time window.
- With a quota cap.
- reCaptcha against automated voting.
None of those measures is foolproof on its own, which is why being able to combine them matters. The IP whitelist, for instance, is what stops you blocking an entire office coming out of one address.
For the organiser
Marking winners, previewing entries before publication, and overriding vote counts when something needs correcting.
And exporting entries and votes **with detailed logs**: time, IP and browser for each vote. That is what lets you prove the contest was clean if somebody disputes it, which in a contest with a prize always happens.
