About Wallet for WooCommerce
Wallet for WooCommerce: one-off payments turned into prepaid balance
People who buy often from the same store go through the same ritual every time: choose a payment method, enter their details again, confirm. Every order is another chance to abandon the cart. Wallet for WooCommerce adds a wallet to each customer's account: they load funds once and spend them on future orders.
It pays to understand this before switching it on: a wallet balance is not a closed sale, it is money you have already collected for something you still have to deliver. The plugin gives you a hint of future sales from those balances, but it also forces you to decide on rules: whether the balance expires, whether it can be withdrawn, whether you charge a fee. All those options exist and you set them up yourself.
From top-up to paid order, step by step
Picture a store with repeat customers that wants them to buy with balance.
Step 1: the customer tops up
From their wallet dashboard they type the amount they want to add. When they press the button, a product is added to the cart and, once they finish checkout and the payment is received, the funds land in their account. If you want to encourage top-ups, you can give bonus funds when criteria are met, such as a minimum or maximum contribution.
Step 2: they spend the balance
They have two routes:
- Partial use: a field in the cart and checkout lets them redeem part of their balance as a discount. It only applies to the cart subtotal, and they pay the rest with the available payment methods. You can restrict this use based on the order total.
- Wallet payment gateway: they pay the whole order with balance. It only appears at checkout if they have enough balance for that order.
Both also work for manual orders. When the order is placed, the balance used is deducted from their account.
Step 3: they want their money back
The customer first chooses their payout method and submits a two-step withdrawal request: amount and confirmation. The funds are deducted as soon as they submit it. With bank transfer, you make the deposit by hand using the details they provide. With PayPal, the amount goes to their ID once you approve it. If you reject the request, the money returns to their wallet. You can charge a fee for withdrawing.
Common questions from stores about to offer wallets
Can they pay a whole order if they lack enough balance?
Not with the gateway: it only appears if the balance covers the order. For that case there is partial use, which deducts what they have and lets them pay the rest with another method.
Can I make the balance expire?
Yes, you can set an expiration date for each user's balance.
Does it work with subscriptions, blocks and multi-currency?
It includes compatibility with Woo Subscriptions, with the cart and checkout blocks and with YayCurrency & WooCommerce Multi-Currency Switcher. With other plugins, test it in the demo.
Can customers send money to each other?
Yes: they can transfer funds to another user of your site or request funds from them, and the other person replies from their dashboard. You can enable an email OTP to confirm transfers and charge a fee for them.
With Wallet for WooCommerce, balance can also be earned and gifted
Not all balance has to come from a top-up. You can hand it out like this:
- For buying: the customer receives funds based on the product total, the order total or a range of totals. They see them in the shop, the product page, the cart and the checkout. You can also grant them on manual orders.
- For actions: creating an account, logging in each day or leaving a product review.
- With gift vouchers: the Gift Voucher module issues vouchers with balance that the user redeems and adds to their wallet.
- With auto top-up: the customer turns on automatic refilling of their wallet when the balance drops below a threshold.
If you give balance for reviews, keep in mind that rewarding opinions can push people to write insincere reviews. In addition, refunds can be sent straight to the wallet, users get email notices about their activity and you can reset the transaction log and balance of any account.
