About WooCommerce Back In Stock Notifications
A customer lands on your store, finds exactly what they were looking for, sees the "Sold out" label and leaves. They almost never leave a message or a trace: they simply disappear, and you don't know whether it was one person or fifty. This plugin puts a form where there used to be only a dead end.
Sold-out products are data you aren't reading
Store owners usually measure what they sell, but almost never what they couldn't sell. Every email someone leaves on a waitlist is a real demand signal from a person who wanted that specific product. WooCommerce Back In Stock Notifications includes a dashboard where you can see waitlist activity and the most requested sold-out products. With it you decide what to restock first based on the interest behind it, not on gut feeling.
How the waitlist works on the product page
The form appears on the sold-out product page, right after the "Out of stock" status. When the product is available again, everyone on the list receives an automatic email that brings them back to the store.
- Variable products: the customer signs up for the exact variation they wanted (a specific size or color) rather than the whole product. When they return, the plugin restores the selection they had made.
- Product Bundles: if a bundle can't be purchased because of insufficient stock, it also supports restock alerts.
- Logged-in customers: they sign up without typing their email and manage their alerts from My Account.
- Guests: they sign up with just their email.
Double opt-in and unsubscribing: alerts that respect the customer
The plugin supports double opt-in, and the confirmation and notification emails include an unsubscribe link. You can restrict sign-ups to logged-in customers or prevent new accounts from being created for guests who subscribe. If you sell in the EU, check with your advisor how this fits your privacy policy: the plugin provides the tools, but compliance depends on how you configure and use it.
If you hide sold-out items, the form won't show
The form only appears when out-of-stock products are visible in the catalog. If you have the option to hide them enabled in WooCommerce's inventory settings, nobody will be able to sign up. It has to be disabled.
And here is what the plugin doesn't cover:
- Already solved: waitlist form, automatic alert on restock, batch sending when there are many alerts (it uses Action Scheduler), demand dashboard, CSV export of contacts and unsubscribe handling.
- You cover it: email marketing campaigns. The plugin keeps the contacts after the alerts are sent and lets you export them, but it isn't a newsletter tool; you'll need to import them into your platform.
- You cover it: restocking itself. The alert goes out when the product becomes available again, not before, so it depends on you updating your inventory.
- You cover it: data protection compliance, which you should review with a professional.
Frequently asked questions about WooCommerce Back In Stock Notifications
Does it work for high-traffic stores?
Yes. When a product is restocked, pending emails are queued and processed in batches with Action Scheduler, so they aren't all sent at once.
Can customers without an account sign up?
Yes, with just their email. If you prefer the opposite, you can limit sign-ups to logged-in customers.
Does it work with variable products?
Yes. The customer subscribes to a specific variation and receives the alert when that option is available again.
Can I use the collected emails for my campaigns?
Yes, to a degree: they are kept after the alerts and can be exported as CSV to take to your email platform. Make sure the consent you collected covers that use.
Why isn't the form showing?
Most likely you have sold-out stock hidden from the catalog. Disable that option in WooCommerce's inventory settings.
