About WooCommerce Beanstream / Bambora Payment Gateway
An unexplained decline is a sale that doesn't come back
When a card fails at checkout and the customer only reads "an error occurred", they can't tell whether they mistyped the number, the security code, or whether their bank blocked it. Most of the time they abandon the cart. WooCommerce Beanstream / Bambora Payment Gateway (Beanstream is Bambora's former name) connects your store to the Bambora gateway and lets you show detailed decline messages instead of generic errors.
It is designed for merchants in Canada and the United States who want to take card payments without sending the buyer to another website.
Customers pay without leaving your store
The payment form is built into your checkout, so you decide how it looks and the buyer never leaves your site. It accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Diners, UnionPay and JCB.
- Mobile: automatic card number formatting and numeric fields for easier input.
- Saved methods: customers save their cards to their account, give them a nickname and manage them from My Account, even without making a purchase.
- Card data: it is stored on Bambora's servers, not in your store, and with Custom Checkout the form is designed for the PCI SAQ A level. Your responsibility shrinks, but it doesn't disappear.
Refunds and deferred charges from the order screen
Whoever runs the store can return the amount, in full or in part, from Edit Order with the card refund action, without logging into the Bambora panel. If the transaction hadn't been settled yet, it is voided automatically.
It also works if you prefer to only authorize the charge and collect it later: from the same order you can capture it, even in parts if you enable partial captures. Other useful options:
- Capture automatically when the order moves to a paid status.
- Force an immediate charge on orders with only virtual products, instead of leaving them as authorizations.
Subscriptions and pre-orders with their own plugins
The gateway is compatible with WooCommerce Subscriptions, including payment date and subscription date changes, and with WooCommerce Pre-Orders: you save the payment method when the customer reserves, and it is charged only when the product is released. Note: those two plugins are separate, this gateway only handles the payment. It is also compatible with high-performance order storage (HPOS) and with the cart and checkout blocks.
Without a Bambora merchant account in Canada or the US, nothing gets charged
This is the condition that decides whether it works for you. Here is what is already solved and what is up to you:
- Solved: card form in your checkout, saved methods, refunds, voids and captures from WooCommerce.
- Up to you: opening the merchant account with Bambora and copying its credentials into the plugin.
- Up to you: selling from Canada or the United States, the only countries it is designed for.
- Up to you: installing an SSL certificate. It is recommended, not mandatory, but with card data it shouldn't be skipped.
- Up to you: if you need other payment methods (bank transfers, wallets), adding another gateway.
Paying with Bambora: answers before you decide
Can I use it if my store is outside Canada or the US?
It isn't intended for that: Bambora is only available to merchants in those two countries.
Are partial refunds possible?
Yes, from the order edit screen, by entering the amount.
Does it work for recurring payments?
Yes, as long as you install WooCommerce Subscriptions.
Does the customer leave my site to pay?
No, payment happens inside your checkout.
