About WooCommerce Chained Products

Selling bundles without making customers build them

Anyone selling a laptop knows the mouse, the case and the extended warranty are bought separately, if they are bought at all. Every accessory is one more decision in the cart, and every decision is a chance to hesitate or leave. And if you have slow stock on an item, it will probably stay there. WooCommerce Chained Products solves this: you link other products to a main product, and when it is bought the customer gets the whole ready-made bundle.

From laptop to order: a step-by-step walkthrough

Imagine you sell laptops and want to include a wireless mouse for free and sell a warranty along with the device.

1. You choose the main product

It can be one you already have or a new one. That product is the one the customer sees and buys.

2. You chain the others

You add as many products as you like, each with its quantity. They can be simple, variable (with the specific variation), subscriptions, downloadable or virtual.

3. You decide how the price is shown

There are two ways. If you leave the price on the main product, the customer pays that amount and the chained items appear at zero in the cart. If you enable individual pricing, the main product stays at zero and the bundle total is the sum of the parts. The second option works when you want the customer to see what each piece is worth, for example a shaving kit with brush, razor and cream.

4. The customer buys

They see all the products in the cart and in their order. They cannot change variations or remove pieces: the bundle is closed. That avoids doubts about what to choose, but it also means that if you want customers to customize the set, this plugin is not the tool.

5. Stock is tracked for each piece

Inventory is controlled on the chained products, not on the main one. If one runs out, the main product cannot be bought either. It keeps you from selling a bundle you cannot complete, though you should know that a cheap accessory being out of stock blocks the sale of the expensive product.

Offers you can build with the same logic

  • Two for one: you chain a blue t-shirt to a red one.
  • Buy one and get more: a printer with several paper packs and cartridges in different quantities.
  • Nested bundles: if the laptop bag already has a USB connector chained, whoever buys the laptop receives all three items.
  • A product chained to itself, to give extra units.

It works for very different sectors: furniture by sets, cosmetics in kits, food packs, pet kits or digital bundles.

Past orders, memberships and view control

If you change the chained products of a main product, you can have them added or removed in orders already placed too. It makes sense for memberships, unlimited downloads or subscription boxes, where the bundle contents evolve. Use it with care: it modifies existing order history.

With the [chained_products] shortcode you show the chained products on the product page. Through its attributes you adjust the view, and you can show or hide the items in the cart, the cart widget, checkout and the order. It is useful if you sell something assembled and do not want to show each component. It can be translated with Loco Translate or another translation plugin.

Frequently asked questions about WooCommerce Chained Products

Can customers build their own pack?

No. Bundles are preconfigured and the customer does not choose variations or quantities.

Does it work with subscriptions?

Yes, it handles subscription products and is compatible with WooCommerce Subscriptions and Smart Coupons.

Can I sell the pack at a discount?

Yes: you set the main product's price below the sum of the parts, or you price each piece and the total is the sum.

Does it slow down the store?

It is designed not to slow down the website or checkout.
