About WooCommerce Name Your Price

A fixed price only tells you whether they bought or not

Setting a price and waiting is an experiment with a single question: will they pay this, yes or no? If they don't buy, you don't know whether you were 2 euros off or 20. And anyone who would have paid more gets the product at the price you chose. With open pricing, what you learn changes: every order gives you a real data point on what the customer pays.

WooCommerce Name Your Price turns selected products in your store into products whose amount is chosen by the customer. It fits donations, material you currently give away, gift cards or payments of variable amounts.

Suggested, minimum and maximum price on each product

When you create the product you tick the Name Your Price checkbox and the fields for the recommended, minimum and maximum price appear. You decide how much freedom to give:

  • With a suggested price: the customer sees a starting figure.
  • With a minimum: nobody can pay less than what you consider acceptable.
  • With no limits: the amount is entirely up to the buyer.

It works with simple and variable products, and it is compatible with the cart and checkout blocks and with high performance order storage (HPOS).

Donations, invoices and gift cards with Name Your Price

Donations are the clearest case: if each donor gives what they can, you raise more than with a single figure. It also works for collecting invoices of different amounts directly on your site, selling gift cards, offering at an open price material you now give away, or gathering data on what your customers are willing to pay.

It is compatible with Product Add-Ons, One Page Checkout, Product Bundles, Mix and Match, Multi-Currency, Gift Cards, PDF Product Vouchers, Deposits, Pre-Orders, Account Funds and Bulk Order Form, among others.

Recurring donations need WooCommerce Subscriptions

The plugin sets the amount of each purchase, but it doesn't handle everything around the payment on its own:

  • Already solved: suggested, minimum and maximum amount per product, one-off donations and payments of variable amounts.
  • With another plugin: recurring payments or donations require WooCommerce Subscriptions; combined, the donor can define the amount and even the period, within your parameters.
  • On your own: deciding which minimum and maximum make sense for each product. The plugin doesn't calculate the right price.

Questions before installing it

Can I stop people from paying next to nothing?

Yes. Set a minimum price and the customer won't be able to enter a lower figure. If you prefer to leave it completely open, don't set any limits.

Does it apply to the whole store?

No, it is enabled product by product with the checkbox, so you can have regular products and open-price products in the same store.

Does it work without WooCommerce?

No. It is a WooCommerce extension and works on top of its products and purchase flow.

Will it tell me the ideal price?

It doesn't calculate it. Each order gives you a real data point on what people pay, but interpreting it and adjusting your prices is up to you.
