About WooCommerce Per Product Shipping

A sofa, a tile cutter and the rest of the catalog on the same rate

A single shipping rate works until the product that does not fit it shows up: the heavy item, the bulky one or the one-off piece that costs far more to ship than everything else. Then either you pay for it out of your margin, or you raise the rate for the whole store and scare off small orders. WooCommerce Per Product Shipping solves exactly that: you put the shipping cost on the product itself and everything else stays as it was.

How cost is calculated inside WooCommerce Per Product Shipping

On each product you enable per-product shipping and fill in a rate table. Each row supports two types of cost:

  • Line cost: applied once per cart line, whatever the quantity.
  • Item cost: multiplied by each unit.

Each row can also target a country, a state or region and a postal code, with wildcards to cover ranges. Only one row matches per destination and they are checked from top to bottom, so order matters: put the most specific rows first and the general ones last.

If the product has variations, each one can have its own rates, which replace the product rates for that variation. Useful when the large size weighs twice as much as the small one.

Two ways to use it depending on your store

You have a few problem products and normal shipping for the rest

Enable the mode that adds to other methods. The plugin adds the bulky item's cost to whatever your other rates calculate (free shipping is left out of that sum). In a mixed cart, the customer sees a single total with the usual shipping for the normal items plus the extra for the large one.

Almost everything has a different fixed cost

Use the standalone method: the final cost is the sum of what each product in the cart costs. Here you can also add a handling fee per product and another per order, both as a fixed amount or a percentage, to cover packaging and preparation.

You have a lot of products to load

The built-in CSV handler exports a product's rates, lets you edit them in a spreadsheet and import them again. It saves you from filling in the same table by hand on dozens of products.

It needs a shipping zone and, in standalone mode, overrides other options

To appear at checkout, you must add it as a method inside a WooCommerce shipping zone and then define the rates on each product. With no rates on the product, there is nothing to add up.

In standalone mode no other shipping methods are offered. You can choose to ignore free shipping and local pickup in the same zones, so checkout stays consistent. And it does not calculate by total cart weight, item count, price or shipping class: if your rules depend on the whole cart, you need a table rate plugin. It is not for pricing by box size either.

Questions buyers ask before installing it

Can I charge more for a heavy product without touching the rest?

Yes. You add its rate on the product and the others keep their usual shipping.

Does it work with variations?

Yes, each variation can have its own rates, which take precedence over the product's.

Can I vary the cost by destination?

Yes, by country, region and postal code, with wildcards.

Is it suitable if my rates depend on the total order weight?

That is not what it does: it works at product level, not cart level.

Can everything be loaded in bulk?

Yes, with the built-in CSV import and export.
