About WooCommerce Pre Orders

Selling something that doesn't exist yet is tricky: either you wait until you have stock and lose the most eager buyers, or you improvise with forms and manual transfers that nobody can reconcile later. WooCommerce Pre Orders puts the reservation inside your store's normal order flow.

Gauge demand before you manufacture or import

Anyone launching limited editions, made-to-order items or seasonal releases often decides how much to produce by gut feeling. Opening reservations before you have stock gives you a real signal of interest: how many people pay or commit for something they can't touch yet.

Charge when they reserve or at launch: you choose

The plugin supports two charging modes:

  • Upfront: the customer pays the full amount when placing the order, like a normal purchase.
  • Upon release: payment is processed when the availability date arrives or when you trigger it manually from the pre-orders admin.

Charging at release eases the buyer's cash flow, but the money doesn't come in until then. Charging upfront funds your production, but forces you to refund if something goes wrong.

Automatic charging depends on the gateway

If you use a supported gateway, the charge happens on its own when the product goes on sale and the customer doesn't have to return. With any other gateway, the plugin includes a pay-later option: the customer gets an email to come back to the store and complete payment. This is where reservations can be lost, because not everyone returns. Before planning a big launch, check which gateway you use.

Dates, notices and buttons your way

  • Optional availability date and time per product, which you can change later.
  • Email to everyone who reserved a product, useful if the launch slips.
  • Your own text for the Add to Cart and Place Order buttons (for example, "Reserve now").
  • Messages on the product page and shop pages with the availability date.
  • A countdown shortcode you can place anywhere and style with CSS.
  • An optional pre-order fee, added on top of the product price.

Variations can't be reserved separately

The plugin works with simple and variable products, but the pre-order applies to the whole product. If you sell a T-shirt in four sizes and only one is on its way, you can't mark just that variation as a pre-order while the others sell normally. It's also best not to combine it with subscriptions that use synchronized renewals or free trials, because they aren't compatible. Here is what it solves and what is left to you:

  • Solved: its own order status to filter reservations, a management page to delay, complete, cancel or email, and a hand-off to the normal WooCommerce flow once completed.
  • Solved: reservations also when a compatible product goes out of stock, although this isn't the same as a backorder.
  • By hand: if you cancel a reservation charged upfront, the refund isn't automatic; you handle it like any WooCommerce refund.
  • By hand: while there are active reservations charged at release, the fee and charging method are locked, although the date can still be changed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delay the launch if there are already reservations?

Yes. You change the date from the pre-orders management page and email everyone who reserved.

Does it work for services as well as products?

It lets you sell products and services in advance, as long as you set them up as products in your store.

What happens to reservations once completed?

Completing a reservation charges it through a supported gateway or sends the payment request, and the order then follows the usual WooCommerce flow.

Can I cancel a reservation and notify the customer?

Yes, you can cancel one or several and send an email with your own message explaining the reason.
