About WooCommerce Price Based on Country Pro Add-on
A converted price is not a price designed for that country
When a shop starts selling abroad, the first thing it does is convert: the product costs 30 euros, the exchange rate says so much, and that is shown in pesos or dollars. It looks neutral, but it is really a pricing decision you have left to the currency market.
The same product is not worth the same to a buyer in Madrid as to one in Bogotá, nor does it compete against the same local prices. Selling in another country means setting another price, and the exchange rate does not tell you which. Price Based on Country organises the shop into pricing zones, each with one or more countries and its currency, and in each zone the price is calculated from the exchange rate or set by hand.
What Pro adds to the free plugin
The free version already detects the visitor's country, shows the price and currency of their zone, supports fixed prices per zone and includes a country switcher. Pro adds what you need when there are many products or many markets:
- Daily automatic update of the exchange rate.
- Rounding of converted prices to clean figures, such as 19.99 instead of 19.43.
- Custom currency symbol, to tell USD 99.99 apart from US$ 99.99.
- Bulk prices by CSV or with WP All Import, instead of product by product.
- Regional price on manual orders created from the admin.
- Shortcodes and widgets that show content according to the visitor's country.
The integrations that decide whether it fits
Pro integrates with WooCommerce Subscriptions, Product Bundles, Product Add-Ons, German Market and WP All Import. If you sell subscriptions or bundles, this list matters more than any other feature.
Checkout happens in the buyer's currency, with no conversion at the payment gateway, as long as your gateway supports those currencies. That is the first thing worth checking with your payment provider.
Differentiating prices in the European Union has rules
If you sell to EU customers, Regulation (EU) 2018/302 on geo-blocking has applied since December 2018. It does not require the same price in every country: you can set different rates per country. What it forbids is treating a buyer from another member state worse because of their nationality or residence; they must be able to buy on the terms of whichever version of the shop they choose. And redirecting them to another version without their consent is not allowed.
Keeping the country switcher visible helps the buyer choose, but before differentiating prices within the EU it is worth checking with whoever advises you.
What Price Based on Country does not do
It does not set prices by province, state or postcode: it works by country only. If you need different rates within a single country, it is not the right plugin.
It does not decide the price for you. The automatic exchange rate keeps the conversion up to date, but it does not know what price each market will bear. That is still your job, zone by zone.
And Pro does not work alone: it needs the free version installed and active.
Requirements and first steps with Price Based on Country Pro
WooCommerce 4.0 or higher, PHP 7.0 or higher, MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.0, 128 MB of WordPress memory and HTTPS. Pro also needs cURL 7.20 and OpenSSL 1.0 or later on the server.
- Install the free version and then Pro, and keep both active.
- Check which currencies your payment gateway supports.
- Create the zones by grouping countries that share currency and pricing strategy.
- Decide in which zones the price is calculated and in which you set it by hand.
