About WooCommerce Sequential Order Numbers Pro
You open the orders screen and see 15, 16, 37, 52. When your accountant sees those gaps, the first thing they think is that an invoice is missing.
A sequence without gaps matters more to whoever keeps the books than to whoever sells
Whoever installs WooCommerce Sequential Order Numbers Pro rarely does it for looks. They do it because someone in administration, an advisor or an auditor has asked for a continuous series that can be matched against invoices, delivery notes or shipments. And the problem shows up months after opening the store, when there are already hundreds of orders with barely useful numbers. That is why it pays to decide the format early, although the plugin can carry on from the last existing number.
What you can configure in the order numbers of WooCommerce Sequential Order Numbers Pro
The plugin replaces order numbers with a consecutive sequence and lets you shape it:
- Starting number: if the store already has orders, it can continue from the last one or start at the number you choose (always higher than the current highest).
- Prefix and suffix: so orders go from 15 to something like WT-01000-UK.
- Date and time inside the prefix or suffix: you can include day, month, year, hour, minute or second.
- Automatic length: it adds leading zeros until the length you want is reached, so 7 looks like 00007.
- Free orders kept apart: orders that contain only free products can be taken out of the paid sequence and given their own prefix, useful if accounting does not want samples mixed with sales.
What to be clear about before deciding
It is not an invoice generator and does not create accounting documents: if you need numbered invoices, another tool handles that. Nor does it renumber old orders retroactively: the new series starts from now on. In addition, some user reviews describe problems with certain versions, such as subscription orders labelled as free when they were not, or searches by number that did not find the order. If you sell subscriptions, test it with renewal orders before putting it into production.
Common questions before installing it
Does it work if my store already has orders?
Yes. It can continue from the last order number or start at the one you set, as long as it is higher than the current highest.
Can I put letters and the date in the number?
Yes, through prefix and suffix, which accept text and the day, month, year or time.
Does it work with payment gateways and other extensions?
It is compatible with standard WooCommerce flows and with extensions such as Stripe, GoCardless, WooCommerce Subscriptions, WooCommerce Pre-Orders, Zapier and several more gateways. It is also compatible with high performance order storage (HPOS) and with the cart and checkout blocks.
Do free orders go into the same series?
Only if you want. You can exclude them and give them their own prefix.
The numbers are set in WooCommerce general settings
The format is defined in the general WooCommerce settings and saved. Before enabling it, agree with your advisor on the prefix, the length and whether free orders will be kept separate, because changing the criteria mid-year leaves mixed series. Place a test order, check that it appears in the expected format and search for that order by its number in the list. If you use subscriptions, also check that renewals receive the correct numbering.
