A coupon that leaks to a deals site gets expensive
Creating a discount code is easy. The hard part is keeping it out of the wrong hands, stopping it from stacking with other promotions, or preventing it from being used twenty times when it was meant for one. Standard WooCommerce coupons fall short as soon as a campaign goes beyond "10% for everyone". WooCommerce Smart Coupons extends that system with rules, store credit and bulk generation, and its real value lies in what it lets you limit, not just in what it lets you give away.
Restrictions so the discount reaches only the right people
You can combine one, several or all of these conditions in a single coupon:
- Minimum spend, products and product categories.
- Specific email addresses and user roles (for example, only the Subscriber role can apply a coupon).
- Location based on the address: country, state, city or postcode.
- Payment and shipping methods.
- Attributes, product quantity and taxonomies such as type, visibility, tags and shipping classes.
You can also cap the discount (a 70% that never exceeds a fixed amount) and make a coupon expire at an exact time.
Store credit, gift cards and BOGO deals in WooCommerce Smart Coupons
Gift card, store credit or voucher are, at heart, the same thing: a balance the customer spends over as many purchases as they like until it runs out or expires. You can sell it in fixed amounts, in an amount the buyer types in, or linked to products. It is also issued automatically when certain products are bought, as a refund credit for a future purchase, and it can be accepted on subscription renewals.
To move inventory, quantity deals cover "buy 3, get 1", "buy 2, get the second free" or at 50% off, with one or several products. Volume discounts work in tiers (for example, one percentage from 10 units and a higher one from 20).
Code batches, links that apply the discount and store-wide notices
- Batches: generate hundreds or thousands of unique codes with your own prefix and suffix, export them as CSV or email them to recipients.
- Links: a URL applies the coupon and can add the products to the cart, useful for social media, affiliates or deals sites.
- Automatic application: the discount applies when products are added, without the customer looking for a code.
- Presentation: coupon designs in your brand colors, coupons shown on the cart or checkout with one-click application, coupon categories and a store-wide notice for seasonal sales.
The margin on each offer and the campaign are up to you
The plugin runs the rules, but it does not decide whether an offer is profitable. This is the real division of work:
- Already solved: generating, restricting, expiring, importing and exporting coupons, selling store credit and applying quantity deals.
- Up to you: working out how much discount your margin can take, deciding which products are excluded and designing the campaign that goes with the code.
- With a developer: any behavior outside the on-screen options, for which the plugin offers a REST API and hooks.
Before handing out codes to deals sites, test on a real order that the restrictions behave as you expect.
