About WooCommerce Split Orders

One out-of-stock item shouldn't hold back the other three

In WooCommerce the order is a single unit: it has one status and is prepared all at once. If one item is on backorder or hasn't arrived from the supplier, the rest stay stuck with it, and the customer, who paid for everything, only sees that the package hasn't left.

WooCommerce Split Orders moves part of the order into another order so each piece can go its own way.

How to split an order with Split Orders, step by step

Imagine an order with three products, one of them on backorder. Here is how it gets solved:

  • You open the order and click "Split order". That action button starts the split.
  • You choose how many units move to the new order. You decide the quantity of each item; you aren't forced to move whole lines.
  • A new order is created for the same customer, with the same shipping and billing details. You ship what you have now and leave the delayed item in the original order.

One point to watch: confirm the quantity before splitting. One user reports that after splitting the wrong quantity they had to split again and ended up with three orders instead of two.

Users say that stock updates correctly when splitting, that the order list and order detail show which order the new one came from, that there is a customizable email template, and that local pickup data carries over to the split order.

Questions before splitting your first order

Does the customer have to pay again?

No. The new order is assigned to the same customer with the same shipping and billing details, and all you do is distribute items and quantities between the two orders.

Can I ship only part of a product line?

Yes: you choose the quantity of each item that moves to the new order.

Does it work if I use several couriers?

Yes. You split the order to match each shipment and attach tracking to each order through shipment tracking.

Can I undo a split?

There is no undo function we can describe. If you get the quantity wrong, the way out users report is to split again, which results in more orders. That's why it's worth checking before you confirm.

Two couriers and a different address: the other reasons to split an order

Besides the backordered item, the plugin helps when a customer asks for part of the order to go to another address: you split off those units, update the shipping address on the new order and process each one separately.

It also fits if you work with different courier companies, or if some of your items ship from an external warehouse and others from your own premises: one user does exactly this, with items from an Amazon fulfillment service mixed with others he prepares himself.

Klarna, Vipps and a split-orders overview: what Split Orders doesn't cover

It's a focused plugin: it splits orders and nothing more. Some users miss an overview of split orders, the ability to modify a split that's already done, and translation of the interface buttons into their language (Dutch, for example). Another says he would like integration with payment gateways such as Klarna and Vipps.

If your accounting is fed from orders, test with one split order before relying on it: one user noticed odd behavior when syncing with QuickBooks Online and suspects it depended on his setup.
