About WooCommerce Square
You have a counter and an online store, and you sell in one of eight countries
Anyone selling from a shop and a website tends to end up with two notebooks: counter stock on one side, online stock on the other, and a customer who buys online the last unit someone has just taken in person. WooCommerce Square is built for that buyer: a business that already takes payments (or is about to) with Square and wants WooCommerce to talk to that account.
Before going further, the limits:
- You need a Square account and a valid SSL certificate on your site.
- It is only available in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Ireland.
- If you only sell online and already have a gateway you like, you gain little here: the value lies in joining your website and your point of sale.
- It is a payment gateway and a catalog connector, not a POS of its own: the counter dashboard and the hardware belong to Square.
The last unit that gets sold twice
Syncing keeps product names, prices and stock levels identical in WooCommerce and Square, so you know what is available online and in store. Catalog, orders and customer data also sync automatically between channels.
This is the most delicate part of any connection like this, because it touches your real stock. Make a backup, test first on a copy of the store with a few products, and check how quantities move before switching it on for the whole catalog.
Taking payments with WooCommerce Square: cards, wallets and delayed capture
On the website and in person you can accept the main cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Cash App Pay, plus Cash App Afterpay for paying in installments. Customers can save their card for faster repeat purchases, and you can authorize the payment at order time and capture it when you ship.
- Fees are flat per transaction, online and in person, and vary by country.
- You can create a discount code in Square and your customers redeem it at the WooCommerce checkout; redemptions sync back.
- It works with the cart and checkout blocks and with high-performance order storage (HPOS).
It is also compatible with WooCommerce Pre-Orders and WooCommerce Subscriptions, which are separate extensions you need installed if you want them.
What happens outside WordPress: reports, team and banking
Much of the value lives in the Square dashboard, not in your WordPress: sales, product performance and customer behavior reports, shift and hours management for your team, email and SMS campaign tools, and built-in bank accounts. Deposits reach your external bank account the next business day at no cost, or instantly for a fee.
Square also handles bank disputes, fraud detection and the PCI side of payment processing. That does not release you from the rest of your store's obligations, such as cookies or privacy, which remain yours.
Common questions before connecting Square to your store
Does it work in Spain?
Yes, Spain is among the available countries. You need a Square account and a valid SSL certificate.
Can I take payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay?
Yes, and with Cash App Pay too. Cash App Afterpay is available for paying in installments.
Can I charge only when I ship the order?
Yes: you authorize the payment at purchase and capture it after shipping.
Does it work for subscriptions or pre-orders?
It works with WooCommerce Subscriptions and WooCommerce Pre-Orders, but those extensions are installed separately.
Can I use my Square discount codes on the website?
Yes. You create the code in Square, the customer redeems it at your WooCommerce checkout, and the redemption syncs back.
