About WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway
Taking payments in a WooCommerce store looks like a technical detail until a customer reaches the last step, sees that their usual payment method is missing and closes the tab. With cards alone, you lose some of the people who had already decided to buy.
WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway: more payment methods in the same checkout
This plugin connects your store to Stripe and brings together cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Diners), wallets such as Link, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay and WeChat Pay, and «buy now, pay later» options such as Klarna, Afterpay and Affirm. There are also local methods: Bancontact, Boleto, Cash App Pay, EPS, giropay, iDEAL, Multibanco, OXXO, Przelewy 24 and SEPA direct debit.
The underlying idea: in ecommerce you don't lose money only for lack of visits, but because of the gap between how each customer wants to pay and what your store lets them do. A Belgian buyer expects Bancontact, a Mexican one may expect OXXO, and someone hesitating over the price may decide if you let them split the payment.
A payment flow that adapts to country and device
- Stripe Elements fields: they help with PCI-DSS compliance.
- Local adaptation: localized error messages, right-to-left languages and fields that adjust to the method and country.
- Mobile and desktop: the checkout is responsive and Apple Pay and Google Pay work out of the box.
- SCA: it supports Strong Customer Authentication, required for transactions within the European Economic Area.
Fraud protection, subscriptions and in-person payments
Stripe Radar uses machine learning to detect and flag suspicious transactions, which is useful if you sell items that are easy to resell or ship to many countries.
If you charge on a recurring basis, it works with WooCommerce Subscriptions and supports several payment methods. For that kind of billing you need that extension separately.
You can also accept in-person payments with the Stripe Terminal M2 reader or, with no extra hardware, with Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android. And if you meet Stripe's requirements, instant payouts let you receive the money within minutes.
It is compatible with the cart and checkout blocks and with high-performance order storage (HPOS).
Deciding if Stripe is your gateway, and what to check first
Before installing, be clear that you need a Stripe account and a valid SSL certificate on your store. Payment methods are chosen based on what Stripe offers in your country and your account, so check there that the ones your customers use are available. Instant payouts aren't guaranteed either: they depend on you meeting the requirements.
Another practical tip: the reviews include complaints about an update that caused problems in one store, with an average rating of 3.6 out of 5. Test new versions in a staging environment before moving them to production.
Can I take payments in person and online with the same account?
Yes, Stripe supports both: online payment in the store and in-person payment with Terminal M2 or Tap to Pay.
Do I need WooCommerce Subscriptions for recurring payments?
Yes. The plugin supports recurring payments through that extension; on its own it doesn't manage subscriptions.
Does it work if I sell in Europe?
Yes, it supports SCA and common methods such as iDEAL, Bancontact, SEPA or Klarna. Check in your Stripe account which ones are available for your country.
