About WooCommerce Subscriptions
Selling once and getting paid twelve times
It is the difference between a business that starts every month from zero and one that starts with last month's revenue already booked. Which is why subscriptions change a shop so much: it is not that you sell more, it is that you stop selling the same thing twice.
WooCommerce Subscriptions is the official extension turning any product, physical, digital or service, into a recurring weekly, monthly or annual charge.
How the sale gets configured
- Period and length, renewing indefinitely or with an end date.
- Free trial, so the customer comes in before paying.
- Sign-up fee, covering the cost of acquiring and setting up the new customer.
- Variable subscriptions, so the customer picks their own frequency.
- Subscription coupons, applicable to sign-up or to renewals.
What the customer can do alone
Pause, cancel, change the delivery address, update the card and move up or down a plan, all from their account. This is not convenience: every one of those they cannot do alone is an email to your support, and the painful one is updating the card, because if they cannot change it the cancellation happens anyway.
Where the money is actually lost
Not in voluntary cancellations. In payments that fail.
Cards expire, get lost, get blocked, and the customer does not notice until the product stops arriving. In a subscription business that can be a considerable percentage of annual revenue, and it leaks silently.
The extension ships automatic retries on a failed charge and email notices. Worth configuring carefully rather than leaving on the default: how many retries, how far apart and what the customer is told each time. It is the setting that recovers the most money in the whole plugin, and the one almost nobody touches.
A note about access
Subscription and membership are not the same thing. This charges; who can see what is something else. If what you sell is access to content, this extension handles the recurring billing and you will also need the memberships plugin for the restrictions.
