About WP Download Manager PDF Viewer
Anyone who sells or shares PDFs (catalogs, reports, data sheets, manuals) faces a problem: if you force a download before reading, many visitors won't even try; if you leave files wide open, anyone can take them. This plugin solves the reading part, right on the page itself.
Whoever shares documents loses the people who can't look first
Nobody downloads a 40-page file without knowing if it's what they need. An in-page preview lets visitors skim, search for a word and decide. For a business that shares technical, training or paid material, that prior decision filters out the merely curious and lets through those who really need it.
What WP Download Manager PDF Viewer does with your files
- Inline preview: with the [doc_preview] shortcode the PDF is shown inside a page or post, using Mozilla's PDF.js engine, so it can be read in the browser and on mobile.
- Full toolbar: search, zoom, rotation, thumbnails, document outline, page navigation and presentation mode.
- PDF gallery: if a package has several files, [pdf_gallery] shows them in a gallery where the visitor switches from one to another.
- Password-protected and members-only PDFs: the visitor unlocks the document before viewing it. The PDF is rendered in the visitor's browser, without going through the Google Docs viewer, which is the default in WordPress Download Manager Pro.
- Copy and print protection: disables right-click and printing on sensitive documents.
- Preview button: every PDF and Office file in a package's file list gets a button that opens it in a modal window.
- Dark mode: it syncs with the WPDM color scheme (light, dark or system).
It needs WordPress Download Manager Pro
It is an add-on, it doesn't work on its own: it integrates with WordPress Download Manager Pro and its template tags. Nor does it turn the download button into an open button: making a PDF open in the browser instead of downloading is a WPDM Pro setting, not part of this add-on.
Protection with limits
Blocking right-click and printing discourages, but anyone who can view a document on screen can always capture it. If something is truly confidential, don't publish it even with a preview.
Office documents
The doc, docx, ppt, pptx, xls and xlsx files are previewed with the Microsoft Office Online viewer, not PDF.js. It is a different engine, so don't expect the same behavior or tools as with a PDF.
Common questions before installing
Does it work for PDFs that aren't public?
Yes. Password-protected and members-only ones are supported.
Can I use a PDF hosted outside my server?
It supports previewing a PDF from a remote URL. If you plan to use external storage, check in the demo first how a large file loads.
Can I change the text of the View button?
There is no panel for it. Changing it means editing a plugin file.
First the package in WPDM Pro, then the template tags
Place [doc_preview] on the page where you want a single document and [pdf_gallery] when a package has several PDFs. Test the flow with one protected and one public PDF, and check the result on mobile before publishing.
